Interview with Krissy Koven — Edgy Alternative

Krissy Koven is a 19-year old model residing in Orlando, Florida.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m into everything Halloween and horror. My favorite movies are the Saw series, Silent Hill, Sweeney Todd, Repo: The Genetic Opera, The Purge, House of 1000 Corpses and The Devils Rejects. Because I live in Orlando, I am naturally a huge theme park nerd and have worked at Sea World and Disney in the past, and also opened the Hogwarts Express at Universal Studios Florida and am currently employed at the Hard Rock Cafe Orlando. I absolutely love to travel, and experience different food and cultures. I am a huge animal lover and haven’t eaten meat in 8 years. My family is from Trinidad in the Caribbean and I used to live there for a few years. I am also a huge fan of fetish clothing and love anything dark and alternative. My favorite type of music is hard rock.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

When I was 15 I started taking modeling classes. I had heard my whole life that I was pretty and should be a model but never really considered it as a career or believed I could do it, but I took those comments as compliments. After 6 months of modeling classes was when I realized how impossible it was to get work. The agency I was with was John Cassablanca. All they wanted was money and didn’t care about me or my career at all… I eventually just gave up and didn’t do any type of modeling for a few years. About a year ago I decided to get back into it and pursue it seriously and I actually started getting paid jobs! Since then I’ve just been doing some shoots and making some extra money but I hope in the near future to turn it into a full time career.

Krissy Koven modeling lingerie outdoorsWhat are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

Honestly, I hate this question because I have no idea where I’m going to be in 10 years… I can tell you where I’d like to be. Obviously anyone’s goal in this industry is fame and success. I am no different. I want to be a successful model and actress. I would like to be more along the alternative line of work. The last thing that I want is to be considered mainstream… I’m looking forward to more tattoos and piercings. I am also thinking about starting cosmetology school since I love hair and makeup so much. More than anything I honestly just want to be out in L.A. That is my favorite city, and whether I’m still doing modeling or not I want to open up my own tattoo or hair salon.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

Right now I probably do one or 2 shoots a month. I have slowed down a bit from what I was doing before because it was getting to be too much with working so much and driving 2 hours out of town to see my boyfriend every other weekend. I mostly do artistic nude shoots and fetish video. I want to get into more glamour, alternative, and fetish photography.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

I have a lot of stories to tell when it comes to modeling… most of them are negative honestly. It’s hard to find professional people these days… or at least hard to tell if they are or not. The best experience I have had was working with this photographer named Peterson in my area. He first found me and asked me if I was interested in helping him shoot for Planet Hollywood. The photos would be used to be put up around the new Los Angeles hotel and in all of the rooms. Working with him was amazing and his artwork is really incredible. We continue to work together today. My worst experience was with a “celebrity photographer” that had found me and said he loved my look and wanted to do some coaching on my facial expressions. To sum up the 3 hour shoot it went from bad to worse and ending in molestation… needless to say I never talked to him again and now bring someone with me to every shoot I go to.

KristyHave you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

No.

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

I would change all of the creepy perverted photographers who just want to see girls naked! I am so sick of those assholes!

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I hate sports and exercising, so I don’t… haha. The only time I ever exercise is I will occasionally take a pole dancing class but that’s about it. I don’t eat meat or most dairy so I’m practically vegan… if I didn’t eat seafood I would be. I’m allergic to a lot of foods so it’s hard for me to find things to eat.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I have a rare disease called Toxoplasmosis and am partially blind in my left eye from it.

Would you change anything about yourself?

I would get my boobs done. I love fake boobs!

Do you have any fears or phobias?

I have claustrophobia and my biggest fear in life is being trapped in a place you don’t know how to get out of. Hence the reason the movies I despise the most because they legitimately scare the hell out of me are The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland.

Interview with Lillie DeLaVallee — Mermaid, World Traveler and Model

Lillie DeLaVallee is a 25-year old model residing in Santa Rosa, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

A quarter of a century ago, I was born in the lush greenery of Mendocino County in Northern California. We are known for possession of world-renowned quality in 3 areas: Women, wine and weed. Growing up in such a small, rural area was actually quite a blessing. I would spend much of my early childhood putting on my mother’s makeup and playing dress up. Perhaps this is why modeling is so much fun for me. I studied psychology at UC Santa Cruz and plan on being a therapist. If I had not entered the world of psychology, I would have studied astronomy. I also am an herbalist and health nut. I believe we are exactly what we put into our bodies! I love to cook, bake and garden. I encompass the meaning of being a modern day mermaid. I feel most at ease near the ocean and I know with certainty that I would never be happy living too far inland.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

My first modeling experience happened when I was living in Santa Cruz. My friend from home came to visit me and wanted me to join her in a shoot at Natural Bridges Beach. I had always loved to play with makeup and dress up. After one day, somewhere between the waves and the camera, I totally fell in love with the high that comes from modeling. I’ve been hooked ever since.

Lillie DeLaVallee wearing a red dressWhat are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

My ideal goal with modeling is to become a Guess Model. I have always been in love with their black and white, ultra sultry images since I can remember. Modeling has encouraged me to perfect my own skills with makeup artistry, so I could also pursue the MUA route on top of modeling. My professional goals include getting my PsyD from a university of my choosing and helping the world become better communicators. I believe most conflict stems from misunderstandings and that with the right words and an open mind, people stand a much better chance of getting along. In five to ten years, I see myself balancing between modeling and psychology.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I have been modeling on and off now for 3 years. I have done a wide array of shoots: glamour, pin up, high fashion, editorial, lifestyle, and alternative. My shoots have had a tendency to shift with my hair color. I went from naturally blonde and more innocent, to pink and alternative, and now I’m at a deep burgundy and red which bears a bit of an air of old hollywood glamour.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

I’ve actually had primarily great experiences. The only uncomfortable situation I’ve had was when a photographer really pressured me to get naked, but I resisted and persisted. That’s nothing new in the modeling world though!

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

The funniest site I’ve shot at was this ultra creepy and old building in the woods with one of my close friends Kendall. We shot with a photographer that we love, Craig Gardner, and we got to be total dorks between sets and lighting shifts. There were giant spiders, bullet shells, sweat and tears trying to lug all our gear up a steep path. We trudged through and had an awesome time!

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

I think it’s silly that you have to be 5’7″ and up or 5’5″ and below to fit into categories. I’m 5’6″. Where do all the ladies who are 5’6″ fit in? I guess I’ll just have to create my own category! Plus, in this day and age, there’s so many wonderful inventions and editing techniques, not to mention really tall high heels… Unless you’re on the runway, your height shouldn’t categorize you.

Lillie DeLaVallee wearing a red miniskirt at the beachDo you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I love hooping and pilates. I’m a green smoothie girl. If you haven’t heard of moringa and aren’t adding superfoods to your regimen, you’re doing it wrong. Superfoods are where it’s at! I add bee pollen, maca, sometimes reishi mushroom, flax oil, dandelion greens and even ashwaganda powder to my smoothies. I have found that L-tyrosine, magnesium and ginkgo are necessary supplements for me to take in order to stay grounded and happy. Being an herbalist really has changed my perspective on health!

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I’m half Latvian. My grandparents fled Latvia after WWII to escape the Russians and hid out in Austria until things had calmed down. They eventually settled in Fort Bragg, CA. Years later, my father met my mother in a small town in Sonoma county. If the war had never happened, I might never have been born.

Would you change anything about yourself?

As a soon-to-be-therapist, I believe there is always room for improvement, whether it may be psychological or in changing destructive habits. Habits create our realities and once you can guide your habits to match the life you want, you’re set! I think most people could use positive affirmations and some serious spiritual healing. I am constantly working on myself in many aspects, most of which are super personal.

Where is the weirdest place you’ve ever peed?

I once peed behind the USF sign in San Francisco, while visiting a friend who had just been admitted to the university there. We were on a late night, semi-intoxicated hunt for Ben & Jerry’s, the ice cream, of course!. Having a full bladder and in that current moment no shame, I spotted the huge sign and raced behind it to pee. It’s kind of ironic, because now the university got a hold of my email and keeps spamming me for grad programs. So I feel like I preemptively got them back for pestering me back in 2009!

Interview with Tia Maria — Alternative Cosplay Model

Tia Maria is a 23-year old model residing in San Diego, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

Hey, I’m Tia Maria, a 23 year old alternative cosplay model. I was born in Minnesota, raised in Arizona and now live in San Diego, California! I have an addiction to Nine Inch Nails, I’m an avid hookah lover and I love attending comic conventions!

I’ve worked for the Stan lee Foundation not long after working as a booth babe for Anthony Winn (artist for the comic book Stripperella).

I now work as a booth babe for the comic book artist, Joe Benitez and I’m on my way to modeling for the first steampunk pin up website that was created by my idol, Kato!

Tia Maria wearing a blue dressWhen, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

Okay, first, I’m gonna explain cosplay modeling… It’s someone who creates, models and acts like a pop culture character of their choice!

I started cosplaying 5 years ago but didn’t start modeling until about 2 years ago while I was living in Australia.
I got involved in the industry when I cosplayed for an Australian comic convention… I ended up getting quite a lot of unusual attention and so I got together a few photographers

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

Personally my goals are to find the perfect permanent place to live… I moved around a lot but I’m ready to root myself.

Professionally I want alternative and cosplay modeling to be my full time profession! I hope to be there by 5 years… 10? I’m sure I’ll be at it here and there.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

My modeling depends on the number of comic conventions I’ll be at in a particular month but on average it’s 2 to 3 conventions a month with about 10 photography sessions in a 4 day weekend. Some are cosplay related, others are alternative, pin up and fashion. While at the convention I model as the booth babe and I sell merch, while dressed in cosplay for a company or artist.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

The best memory I have is of my first nude shoot. I was the only model, out of 5, that was featured in an exhibition twice and I was the only one with the largest photograph on display!

The worst was working with a photographer that was so beyond my experience I became terrified out of my mind! Sadly, it showed in the photos but it didn’t stop me from continuing my modeling!

Tia Maria behind a mirrorIs there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

I hope that eventually body shaming will stop. In my personal opinion, by now, literally everyone can be a model. Lightroom and photoshop have made it all possible and companies truly need to stop shaming society by only using models that are a size 2-0.

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I use the military diet as a guideline when it comes to eating and if I can’t use Jillian Micheals’ Ripped in 30 then I make it a point to walk for an hour to and hour and a half.

Would you change anything about yourself?

I tend to be a bit envious of other models. I hope to change this in time because really… Who wants to constantly feel like they’re not in par with such amazing models?

What superpower do you wish you had? Why?

I wish I were like wolverine! Adamantium claws, superhuman strength and regenerative powers? Uh… hellz to the yea!

Interview with Ms. Perry

Ms. Perry is a 25-year old model residing in San Francisco, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

My teacher’s all called me Ms. Perry in grade school and it never really struck till I started modeling. It is a cute way to separate myself from the rest in the modeling industry. As an only child I lived in the valley of California on a 10 acre farm where I grew a big imagination and lots of creative ideas. I’ve always been interested in fashion and being in front of and behind the camera. Now my hobby is renovate vintage furniture. I go thrift stores and yard sales shopping for authentic furniture, where I fix up and sale out of my garage. Just like clothes, I love putting together a room with one of a kind pieces and in my opinion, there is nothing like the 40-70’s style.

Ms Perry wearing jeansWhen, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

In 2010 a girlfriend of mine, who had just been signed with an agency out of San Francisco, knew I was looking into modeling but did not know where to start. She informed me about Model Mayhem and let me tag along with her to different shoots which helped not only to meet different people in the industry but see what happens behind the scene. I also discovered how to search for gigs using Model Mayhem, Facebook and other social medias. I instantly fell in love! All the hard work and passion that is involved in art of self expression is what gives me the drive to do this kind of work. I enjoy it so much.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

My number one personal goal, which intertwines with my professional goal, is to do what I love so I never have to work a day in my life. I want to do things that are creative and expressive wether it is modeling or my renovating projects.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

Now that I’m a new mom to my two month old son Roland, things have changed a lot. I’m excited to get back in my routine of about 4 to 6 shoots a month depending on the time of the year. I do my own hair and make up and wardrobe for my shoots and others. I specialize in commercial print and I also do alternative, glamour, fashion and fine art photo-shoots.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

Living in Hollywood for a summer where I did a lot of networking and worked with artist and photographers, would be my favorite experience. As far as bad experiences, I have yet to have one. Thankfully.

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

Eating disorders and sexual harassment are a very real thing in the modeling industry. I don’t wish those things on anybody but in this industry if you don’t protect yourself or have thick skin you can definitely fall victim to it. Thankfully I’ve never been faced with these situations but I wish we could all be more honest about our intentions so there is less situations like these. All kinds of people do all different kinds of work so there is no need to bring people down with lack of interest or other motives.

Ms Perry wearing a slayer shirtDo you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

Eating healthy and staying active come pretty easy to me. I try and stay away from junk food but I would be lying if I said I don’t cheat often.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I crush on old men. I can’t help myself when I run into them at the grocery store. They are so cute and respectful I can’t help but strike up a conversation. It’s very innocent but I get a kick out of it and they don’t seem to mind the attention either.

Would you change anything about yourself (physical or otherwise) if you could?

There is always room for improvement, but I am very happy with myself and my life now.

What is your favorite thing to do alone?

Every morning I sit on my porch by myself with a cup of coffee. It is so relaxing and I enjoy the sounds of nature.

Interview with Alannah Diamond

Alannah Diamond is a 23-year old model residing in Los Angeles, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

Greetings ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, readers of all ages! My name is Alannah Diamond, and I’m a twenty-three year old free lance model from the “heart of it all” in Ohio, USA.

I was born and raised in Toledo, a city near the border of Ohio and Michigan, and moved around throughout the Northwest portion of the state growing up. I’ve also lived in Los Angeles, and the greater surrounding area at various intervals of my life to further my education, career, and for some music experiences that came my way.

Currently, I’m back in Ohio where I freelance as a model, and am a self-established booking agent, manager and tour manager for varying artists both on and off of labels. I spend my days off of tour either on the set at a shoot, on the phone or the computer booking up the next big -small, inbetween!- tour to come through your city, or working on music. I’m also an avid videogamer; I love old school Nintendo and I’m slowly picking up on “Call of Duty”!, and nerd out to World of Warcraft. Also, the whole “crazy cat lady” persona? I totally live it up, it’s even tattooed on my knuckles!. I also am a competitive equestrian when I have the chance. But above all else, I’m a proud mother to my beautiful daughter, and a loving wife to my wonderful husband.

Alannah Diamond with a lot of tatoosAlthough I’m fortunate enough to have my hobbies encompass my interests, I have a few other ones hidden between the lines. For instance, I love public speaking and debate, and enjoy helping others learn positive and assertive speaking skills so they can gain confidence, and be confident speakers themselves. I think charisma is a very important trait and can be incredibly life-changing, in terms of helping people find their own self worth and learn to value themselves,. I’m glad to help others discover this, while building upon my own basis of charisma as well. It’s so rewarding for everyone involved! In addition, I love to write. Not necessarily anything I share publicly, but more-so a way to release my inner thoughts, angels, demons, hopes and dreams, and convey them in a way I can remember and reflect upon; better understand, and grow from. However, despite my introvert qualities, you can find me at the grungiest dive bar in your town catching the local talent, thrifting for some neat fashion apparel, or exploring the hidden treasures in whatever city I end up in. I love to get out and meet new people and hear their stories! You never know if the next person you meet can change your life, or vice versa!

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I’ve always had a little bit of a weakness, and more than just in my knees for my heck-of-a-handsome husband. It’s a little weakness most girls go through at sometime in their life, and it’s called a lack of self-confidence and lack of freedom of expression.

Growing up, I was always picked on or bullied for some reason or another, and never quite fit in. This is in turn made it a constant struggle to get ready in the mornings and face the monster in the mirror that was myself. But, girls I’d see on magazine covers, and on billboards…they looked so happy, and so carefree. Almost like no one could un-plaster their smiles and make their eyes lose their sparkle and shine. And that..that is what I wanted to feel for myself. One day, sometime in fall of 2009, I just gave it a whirl. I had no idea what I was doing, but I had enough random pictures of myself to allow ModelMayhem to let me in on, well, the mayhem! I read the rules, the “dos-don’ts-neverevers” and “most definitlies” of the industry, and started my journey. A few messages lead to a few phone calls which lead to a few shoots. A few turned to a few more, and I noticed some progress along the way. Not even just in my modeling skills with posing, and wardrobe, and conceptual design. But, progress within myself. Something about the kind word of a photographer mellowed out the often harsh critcism that preceeded it, and lead me to a balance; a homeostasis, an equillibrium, if you will, of happiness. I was learning to embrace my positive qualities, and build upon my bad – not to turn away from them and belittle myself over them. I finally found peace. I was learning to change the negativity that others saw, and sculpt it into little bits of art.

Alannah Diamond wearing sunglassesAs I progressed in modeling, I also felt free to let go. I knew I never was and never could be “agency standard”. Not only was it that I wasn’t built or born “right”, but, it wasn’t in me to hide my true colors. In the outlet of alternative modeling, I found a culture to embrace my love of tattoos, piercings, and all things body modification – from hair dye to nail polish choice. I felt accepted, and loved that others embraced my choices of self-expression and that I in turn could embrace theirs as well.

This opened up one of the best and longest ongoing chapters of my life, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

This is a tough one, as I have short-term goals that seem ever changing as I see and learn new things, and long-term goals that I’m constantly tweaking to make sure they’re exactly what I want to be working towards!

Personally speaking, I’d love to go back to school, and re-focus my time and energy towards really getting to know the music industry, and have a degree to show my credibility, although I don’t firmly believe one needs a degree to dictate knowledge and worth in some work aspects, but the world tends to believe otherwise, and add a focus on voice, so I can learn to strengthen my voice in the off chance I take my music back to the stage at more than just a singer-songwriter night. In fact, I’m a classically trained vocalist, little known fact!. I’d also love to become a motivational speaker, not as a career, but as a way to utilize a hobby of mine that I enjoy, and turn it into something to benefit others. I’d love to speak about self-worth, and learning to value ourselves. I feel if children and young teens are able to learn to value themselves at some of the most difficult times of our lives like middle school and high school, it can change their outlook on their futures, their capabilities, and the decisions they make. I feel as though it can prevent children and teens in compromised situations at home, school, work, or even on the internet from letting their worth deteriorate to the verge of self-harm or suicide, or from forming destructive habits. I’d love to take my life story and hardships and use it allow others to open up and tell those of their own.

Professionally speaking, I aspire to make an easily identifiable name for myself within the music industry, just as my father has done before me. I want to be one of the strongest independent female agents in the game, and make artists on my roster as happy as they make me by allowing me the opportunity to work alongside them to make their dreams come true.

In addition, I’d like to take my modeling more into the published world. Not just for the sake of pictures of me in various magazines and in print, but, for the sake of sharing my story so that it may in turn inspire others to partake in the art of modeling, or at least in art in some form or another. There’s no better way to express ourselves, and safely release and convey emotion of any kind than through a form of art, and I wish it upon everyone to experience this for themselves in some facet. I firmly believe art has the power to change us for the better.

Alannah Diamond smoking cigaretteIn five to ten years, I’d love to be owning and working out of my own little office space, perhaps with a staff of my own, and raising my daughter, and another little cub by then! I’d love to own a beautiful home with my family, and maybe even own some horses again for my children and I, maybe even my husband, to compete with! I plan on still keeping up my worldly travels, alongside my husband on his tours, and bringing the family along for the ride, to experience the adventures awaiting them, and to see the sights that the world has to offer, and all that is inebetween.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

Recently, I spent some time touring on some tours I booked and was tour managing, and touring with my husband and his former band, so I took time off from formally booking shoots because my schedule was too unpredictable. Typically, I try to book one shoot a day to every other day on my travels on the road, so I can experience new photographers and settings that I may not get to otherwise. At home, I focus mainly on working on tours and on spending time with my family, so my shoots are one to two times a week at most. However, since my rates are hourly, I tend to book lengthier shoots, and I also do some light travel through my state and those surrounding, so the time spent on shoot days can be a whole day sometimes.

A-typically, I focus on modeling, but I do dabble in video and acting, and am seeking to build my portfolio for these. I feel as though encompassing a broad range of diversity in one’s portfolio as a model can help them to reach a broader spectrum of potential clients, and really set them apart. It’s always great to focus on your forte, but don’t hesitate to try new options!

I primarily focus on editorial, alt-glamour, which is a term I coined to some extent, but hey, it works!. I love modeling clothing for designers and companies that send them to me, and showcasing that alternative looks don’t necessarily mean that I can’t have sophistication and class. Faux fur, a floor-length dress and some diamond? Count me in! I love getting dolled up and playing the part of a fanxcy vixen for retro-chic inspired photoshoots. But, nothing beats leather, pleather, studs and spikes; all things sultry and….nice? Hey, catwoman had the right idea! Her entire get-up is incredible, and so sexy, yet empowering. Nothing is better than a lady showing off her every curve while looking completely confident while doing so! I have quite the set of hips for a shorter lady, and latex, leather, and the like, have helped me embrace my body structure in a whole new way. Rather than feel ashamed of what I can not change , I’ve learned to feel not only comfortable – but ,confident – in my own skin.

Alannah Diamond on a chess floorPlease tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

In modeling, one of the best experiences I had was my very first publication. It was for a webzine called Inside Shock, and was a breakthrough in helping me reach a target demographic of kids my age and bit older, give or take. It felt amazing to be chosen to represent the modeling aspect of the webzine, and to be able to know that my story was being shared with others, and being heard and seen around the world. I’ll never know just how many people I reached, but even one is good enough for me. That first moment when you realize you’ve been published is incredible. You know you have a chance to inspire others through your art, be it words, photographs, or a combination of both; whatever your choice of passion may be.

As far as my worst experience, I tend to look back on everything as a milestone and a learning experience, and turn every negative event positive. I’ve had some run-ins where I was rejected for various castings, and didn’t quite make the final cut of others. Though it can be devastating, especially if it’s more of a local based event or casting call, or a smaller one with a minimal pool of candidates, I always remember to hold my head up, and that just because I wasn’t what one particular person or panel of people were seeking out, doesn’t mean that I won’t be what someone or some group is seeking out tomorrow. There’s always a niche and calling for me and what I present, and I just have to keep seeking to find those callings! So, essentially, lesson learned: keep positive, and keep up the journey. Never let a roadblock or detour let you stray and begin the trek home. For, for every step backwards we take, we are only setting ourselves farther from our destinations ahead, and only putting us closer to where we began.

I’ve taken my rejections, be them big or small, and turned them into motivation to move forward, and pick up the pace.

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

Well, it’s nothing to be ashamed of. An embarassing moment, or two? Or three? Trust me, I’ve had my fair share of these…or entire helping of!

Much like with turning rejections into positive motivation, I take my lesser moments with a grain of salt, and turn them into a laugh, and a chance to have a funny memory to reflect on in retrospect when revisiting an old shoot.

One time, at a photo shoot I was singing and dancing between poses, and the photographer kept looking up and noticing! I swear I’m professional as they come, but, when the mood is right, I love to let out little bursts of energy. I feel as though they keep the mood in the room elevated, and really show off the colors of my personality at their most vibrant. I’m always happy to get the job done – and get it done well – while making everything comfortable for all involved, and breaking the ice of new shoots with a little bit of humor and by unleashing my “silly side”. Who knows! Sometimes photographers, make-up artists, hair dressers and stylists alike, will all join in and have a sing along.  I’m by no means saying this has happened to me, but I’m also not saying that it hasn’t!

Bottom life: Sure, it’s a little shocking to be caught goofing off guard, but learning to embrace can lead to a super fun time, and a positive memory to be made.

Alannah Diamond next to a pianoIs there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

Within the industry, I’d love for more acceptance -even more than as is now- of alternative girls. Be it because of body modification, or not being industry standard.

True, modeling allots for girls to market apparel, fashion items, and essentially portray themselves as the epitome of good-looking, and what society and those looking at them inspire to be. But, how exactly does one define good-looking, and what they wish to be? Don’t we all embrace unique qualities in what appeals to us, and what we in turn would like to like?

Some of us embrace small frames, and others fuller. Some of us embrace shorter gents and gals, and others of us taller. Some of us find colored hair beautiful, while others of us prefer natural.

With no definitive standard of beauty that is universal, I wish the industry was open to embracing more differentiation and variety on a more mainstream scale. Let product placement scouts and agencies pick and choose what they think is best, but, don’t discriminate and make every casting the same. Let beauty be seen in all shapes, sizes, colors, and forms. For what beauty would the world be if it was bland?

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

Asides from the sport of typing and texting, dialing on the phone and emailing for business, I’m not as active as I’d like. My cardiologist has encouraged me to pick up my routine for medical reasons, since I have sinus arrhythmia and supra-ventricular tachycardia, and I’m slowly working on picking up a cardio routine for health and well-being purposes. I’ve learned through him that cardio helps improved the muscles in your heart to help produce slower, steadier, healthier heartbeats – all of which are useful for the conditions I have! I also horseback ride competitively and leisurely from time to time. Despite what people think, it’s a lot of exercise! Controlling a fifteen-hundred pound animal on leg pressure definitely makes you “feel the burn!”

I’ve been vegan and vegetarian, but had to forfeit due to approaching both diets wrong, and hurting my health more than helping it. However, I’m working towards being pescatarian for health reasons, and couldn’t be happier. Red meat, though constantly in debate, is lately found to be not healthy for the heart, so I”m working to avoid it as much as possible. In addition, lean chicken and fish are leaner, and therefore are healthier for the body, and easier to digest. I also do not drink caffeine, except as a very – very – limited treat on a busy day, as it messes with my heart rate, and makes it speedier than it already is. Cutting out caffeine eliminates the crash afterwards, and has taught me to rely on a healthy sleep schedule, healthier eating, and natural methods of energy.

Alannah Diamond nakedNutrition and exercise, for me, not only are essential to my lifelong medical conditions, but to my health in general. In addition, I feel tenfold better making choices that benefit my body and image. Though it seems exercise has taken a backseat due to a busy schedule and my fear of my heart condition worsening from being active, I feel as though exercise is crucial to looking and feeling my ultimate best. It’s also a form of keeping up the natural energy that I rely so much on!

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I was active in the FFA, or “Future Farmers of America” in high school and won national recognition in Extemporaneous Speaking, Mock Job Interview, and twice in the Agri-Science Fair. I also was my high school’s first and so far only national speech and debate team competitor, in 2009. Though I wasn’t playing a varsity sport or making headlines for popular activities, I was doing things I loved, and embracing the skills I was building upon.

Also, FFA isn’t just for those interested in agricultural! It was a great way for me to learn new social, professional, and competitive skills that I’ve carried with me my entire life, and that have motivated and inspired me in my career fields – even as far-fetched from agriculture as they may be.

Would you change anything about yourself (physical or otherwise) if you could?

As I take a second to look at myself, and analyze myself inside and out, a million and one things cross my mind. Better this, bigger these, smaller those, a brighter this, longer that.

But wait; if we could just up and change things about ourselves, would it really be doing us any good? The best part of changing ourselves is the journey of finding what it is we wish to change, embracing it, and only changing it if we genuinely want to. So many changes I personally aspire to make on my little list are things I think society would embrace better, or someone once told me to, or that I feel would get me farther in modeling or whatnot. But truly, they aren’t things I’m ultimately unhappy with.

That being said, over time, I’ve learned there are things that I personally do want to change. More-so, eradicating poor decisions in my past, to change the outcome, or to cut-out the thoughts that sometimes come back to revisit. Don’t get me wrong, I never killed anyone! I just have things I’ve said and done that I’m not entirely fond of like any human being. But then I realize, changing a bad decision may change the outcome of the chain of events in my life, and I may not be where I am today. Not completely where I want to be, but pretty dang close. I have loving parents, a beautiful daughter, a loving husband, great pets, and a promising career. A roof over our heads, food on the table, clothes on our backs.

Alannah Diamond like a rockstarI’m alive, and changing anything in my past could change any one or all of those things, and I’m ultimately not willing to change a bad decision or two and find out. The bottom line? I have a lot I’d like to change. We all do. But, most things we wish to, we simply cannot. It’s far better to embrace where we stand in life, and focus on changing direction and changing where we are going, than changing our past, or things that make us who we are, or that we want to change because of people and things other than ourselves.

Do you have any fears or phobias?

I have my fears and they are more than few! But, I can’t tell you all my weaknesses, because you could plot my demise in a few easy steps.

I am, however, immensely afraid of, not spiders, but, spider and cobwebs!. I’ll never entirely understand why, asides from associating them directly with the little eight-legged buggers, but, I am petrified of webs. I shriek, I scream in the most stereotypical girly voice ever, and my fight or flight makes me pick the option of “flight” at the mere sight of one. I’m currently trying to cope and learn new methods of overcoming this fear, as it can be embarrassing, especially if it’s in public and I see a random cobweb on something and lose it. Next time you see a girl ducking and running from a big swinging string of dust off a museum ceiling or something of the nature, don’t hesitate to track her down and drop a friendly “hello”. Chances are, that girl is me.

Interview with Mimi Palafox

Mimi Palafox is a 19-year old model residing in Fremont, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

Hello! My name is Dominique, but I’ve gone by Mimi since I was very young. I was born in the Bay Area and began acting in Kindergarden. I started taking classes which helped me learn how to model. I’m studying to become a Fashion Designer, but modeling will always be one of my favorite hobbies.

Mimi Palafox wallking on a pipeWhen, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I kinda just threw myself into it by begging my mom to sign me up for classes! I was really young when I started and I’m glad I have gotten a chance to learn as much as I can. Having an agency for a while definitely helped me develop more and I have worked with some amazing people.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

I hope to own my own business and on my downtime model for photographers. My dream would to be to become an alternative model and travel, but I would like to get more in shape and get covered before I can accomplish that.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I really enjoy anything artsy! Big hair and makeup, with dramatic poses are always my favorite. I also enjoy pin up and anything with a more darker theme. I would love to find some photographers that specialize in just that, because I’ve got a lot of clever poses practiced already.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

The best experience would be working for Pixar as I posed as a “cheerleader” for Monsters University. I got to see everything backstage and wore an official Disney costume which was pretty amazing. Sadly I’ve had many bad experiences, although I think that good and bad come hand in hand, and it’s mainly come from people not being professional. I love it when everyone is focused and professional in a shoot.

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

I wish that there were more opportunities for alternative crowds up in Northern California. It seems as though it’s really hopping in Southern California and would love to see that trend start moving up.

Mimi Palafox checking on her thighDo you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I grew up running around from auditions to soccer practice and have learned that balance is key. I workout nearly everyday and hope to work my butt off to attain my ideal body shape. I usually eat sandwiches, light pastas, salads and on the occasion, a juicy cheeseburger. I’m definitely a foodie, but I try limiting my fat and sugar intake. I think nutrition and exercise is vital to maintaining a healthy and happy lifestyle. You just got to see what works for you!

Would you change anything about yourself (physical or otherwise) if you could?

I think that you should try growing everyday and evolve into the person you want to be. There are some things I wish I could change about me and there are things I don’t have the ability to change. I just need to accept the person I am, love myself, and try to change for the better.

How do you think you are most likely to die?

Such a great question! I think my ideal death would be at an old age surrounded by the people I love. I want to see nothing but smiles when I leave this earth. But I will probably end up dying by doing some sort of extreme sport that’s too extreme for me to handle!

Interview with Wenchi – Model and Artist

Wenchi is a 24-year old model residing in Santa Rosa (California) with a passion for art. She has been doing runway, print, and promotional modeling since 2007. Here is her story:

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi folks! I’m Wenchi, a Fine Art, Fashion, Fantasy chameleon model out of the San Francisco Bay Area. I’ve been modeling since 2007, and have been self represented and managed the entire time. I’m also a makeup artist, and love participating in conceptual shoots, fetish fashion, alternative nudes, and getting nekkid in nature. I tend to be into darker more sensual work, and that’s expressed pretty well in my portfolio.

Do you have a nickname or artist pseudonym? Who came up with it and how?

My pseudonym is Wenchi, and in 2003 it’s root was bestowed upon me. My two best friends, Jessica and Amanda Shepherd who has also become a stellar model, would be little punk brats causing a ruckus around town, and we called ourselves The MOFOs and Wench. Amanda named me Wench, because I was acting particularly saucy that day, and the nickname has stuck around since then. In 2007 when I was getting into modeling, I had to figure out a pseudonym to keep my modeling work separate from some other aspects in my life. I was really into the “Suicide Girls look” which I found very alternative and really alluring, so being the alt girl I was, Wench seemed very fitting. I didn’t think it was quite socially acceptable enough alone, so I added an “i” on the end to make it cute and foreign sounding.

Wenchi - Amazing bodypaintWhen, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I was helping a friend in May 2007 with her high school senior project, and as she was making a fairytale fashion line for her submission she decided to do a fashion show to show off her hard work. I helped with makeup for the show, and modeled one of her gowns. I was an aspiring makeup artist at the time, and modeling had interested me in a way nothing had before, so I went for it and this is where I’m at now!

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

I’d like to get to a point where I can live in whichever city I like and be comfortable and secure. I’d like to see myself traveling the world, participating in humanistic volunteer work, and getting to participate in work that shows in national museums, large magazines and possibly on television. I’m very interested in science, and nature preservation, and if there is a way to figure out how to tie what I do now into both of those things, I’ll be very satisfied. I’m very interested in traveling, and am looking into how I can find creative ways to tie that into my modeling, and get to experience new cultures and find inspiration in their practices.

How much do you typically charge for a photo-shoot?

For Fashion work I charge $75/hr with discounts on multiple day, full day and half day rates. For Nude work I charge between $100 and $150 per hour depending on content, and also have discounts on multiple day, full day and half day rates. If you’re interested in booking me, shoot me your ideas and we’ll make something work!

Wenchi - YellowBubblesPlease tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

Recently, I woke up to about 50 facebook notifications, and messages from my team that we had been chosen for the cover of Central California Magazine for our underwater photoshoot featuring Yellow Bubbles Photography, Black Lotus Clothing, and Spoiled Cherry makeup and styling. We had shot on Christmas Eve, and while it was a beautiful 70 degree day, the pool we were told was heated…wasn’t. It was a whole ten degrees cooler than the air outside, and was the most surreal photoshoot in my life. I nearly got hypothermia, and felt high from the shock my body was going through to make our beautiful artwork happen. We decided as a team to keep going even with the non heated pool surprise, and it worked out so well that we got cover on an awesome magazine!

In June, I got heat stroke working SubZERO Festival for Black Lotus Clothing. I was staying well hydrated and fed, but our building we were working in to get ready was sweltering hot, and had no ventilation. While getting sewn into a priceless bone and pearl encrusted gown, I passed out while standing there. Thankfully I’ve dealt with these symptoms before, and knew to throw myself onto a bar stool as I was falling over so I wouldn’t break the amazing gown I was getting sewn into. I was quickly rushed outside, as I was gagging from the nausea of passing out. My stomach voided itself, but I was in fresh air and had a way to sit down, and get my senses back. I promptly ate 3 bowls of chili, drank a glass of wine, 3 glasses of water, and proceeded to wow the crowd for the festival evening in a group of amazing models in a rad cabin wreckage themed installation. Thankfully I recovered well and was able to get my job done regardless of dealing with some heat stroke.

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

When I was working in Los Angeles this past winter, I was fired from a national television TV show (who’s name I cannot disclose) for being allergic to latex. I had been requested to work for the show for the whole series (a month of filming), but after reviewing my forms on the first day of work, they decided to let me go that day. I had gone to LA for the audition, and we discussed my allergy there at that time, they said it would be no issue, and then they went back on their word. I was somewhat stranded work wise in LA, but got ahold of some friends who helped me find work. Instead of working for this TV show, I got to bodypaint with Trina Merry at The Edwardian Ball at The Fonda Theatre, I got assist Trina Merry in painting for a NERF commercial thats on TV right now, and I got to get bodypainted by the world famous Pashur and Alex Hansen. My fury from being fired and huge embarrassment over my allergy got turned into some really rad creative energy!

Wenchi - Amazingly flexibleIs there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

I would make San Francisco a much more popular place for industry work, like LA or New York, as I live here and selfishly don’t want to move to get all the work I want 😉

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I’ve been “vegetarian” since 2003. I say “vegetarian” because I have very high standards for the poultry and mammals I consume, as I wont eat it unless someone I know killed it. I feel like I have no right to eat meat that was killed outside of my community, because closeness with food is like closeness to god. Besides my addiction to gummy bears, worms, rings and other gummy candies, I try to eat food that’s without pesticides and GMOs. For exercise I like to go mountain hiking, bicycle riding, yoga, swimming in the Russian River, and having a great sex life with my boyfriend. Keeping my exercise well rounded and diverse helps me feel the most healthy.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I had my first lesbian sex at church camp. This is literally the only thing I could think of that people don’t really know about me, this was a hard question!!

Would you change anything about yourself (physical or otherwise) if you could?

I wouldn’t mind being taller and having some more weight on my bones, but I think that things really worked out well in my favor physically 😀
