Interview with Charrdonnay — Fashion student turned Model

Charrdonnay is a 21-year old model residing in Denver, Colorado.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

Hey Everyone my name Is Charrdonnay I’m from Memphis and now officially a Colorado Native. I’m the youngest of three, and I come from a very talented family. My middle sister just qualified for the U.S bob sled team. My brother is a very well established artist in Denver so it’s only right to try and live up to their talents. I’m Fashion design student at Emily Griffith and in the process of opening up an online clothing store, but that might take another year or so. I love being outdoors and around friends and family, I’m not big on the club scene but I do enjoy a good night out. I love restaurants and I really want to start traveling this year.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I started modeling when I was 18 years old; I did an open casting call for an agency called Avant Tout, it was a small agency. I did a lot of runway and about a year later the agency moved to Texas. I went freelance for a while and developed myself even more. During that year I found a lot of work doing glamour and swim wear. I’ve done 3 magazines and I signed with an agent that is based in Atlanta and I have some great things coming this year, so much acting and many many more magazines.

Charrdonnay modeling a red dress on a railroadWhat are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

In 5 years I see myself running my clothing store and accomplishing all my major modeling and acting goals. I’m trying for Maxim magazine and I’ve been offered to do French Playboy, also a few acting gigs so I have some big stepping stones ahead of me.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I model pretty frequently; right now my agent is having me practice my posing 15 minutes a day in the mirror. I have a full body mirror in my bedroom that I practice in. There isn’t much that I haven’t tried modeling. I still love high fashion but I mostly do glamour swimwear, lingerie and some nude.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

The past 6 months have been my best modeling experiences. I loved working with new photographers and make up artist but I think more is yet to come. I think the best so far was when I got published In Moorish Hareem Magazine and my photo was right next to girls who have been in Maxim and Playboy. It was also nice to gain followers of my social media and being offered to work with my own agent. I look forward to what other great things I can accomplish.

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

My father was a body builder and he was always big on health and nutrition. I was the kid who was eating cauliflower and carrot sticks. I work out three to 5 times a week depending on how busy my schedule is. I love playing volleyball and dancing; I took a belly dancing course and had a blast. I pretty much walk everywhere, I enjoy lifting weights and yoga. My diet is more balanced than anything, in fact I love fruits and lean meats, not too much red meat; I keep it light mostly chicken and fish.

When I really need to tone up, my sister writes my diet plan. But I do love sweets, that’s my weakness. I do fat Friday where I can eat all the donuts and sour patch kids my stomach will let me, although I do eat dark chocolate during the week. Don’t get me wrong, diet and excercise is very important. I’ve come to realize it makes modeling easier. A lot of people don’t understand that the better your skin and your body are, the more photographers and make up artist want to work with you. You don’t have to be physically perfect, but I think diet and exercise help with your mental state as well and keeps you happy and pleasant.

Charrdonnay modeling a bikini in a riverWould you change anything about yourself?

No, I wouldn’t change a thing about myself. I used to want to change everything but I’m learning to love myself and others would love me too. Everyone has low self esteem days but even on those days you have to find the light in yourself and love yourself especially in this industry, since it’s solely based on looks but people should also know you leave an impression as well.

Have you ever gone without wearing underwear all day? Why & what did you do?

I rarely wear underwear, it’s a comfort thing for me. I really just go about my daily life, I’ve gone to work and school. One time I had forgotten to wear them… it was quite embarrassing especially when it’s a gown that it takes 2 people to get you into.

Interview with Red — Tattooed Model, Mother, Jäger Girl

Red is a 24-year old model residing in Smyrna, Delaware.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

Born in South Carolina, grown in little old Delaware – the name is Ashley, but Red is more appropriate nowadays. Along with raising my tiny monster, Pierceson, I hold the title for a lot of things. Model, Brand Ambassador, Nursing Student, Jäger Girl, and my newest venture, Cocktail Waitress at a strip club.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

Oh goodness, girls ask me this all the time!

I got my foot in the door to the modeling industry working at car shows for an audio company when I was 20. It all happened so fast, it was kinda just like “here, put this shirt on and go take pictures with people’s cars.” That’s what started my portfolio. After that, I just ventured into bigger, better, and more tasteful projects. Haven’t looked back since.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

Well I was about to say “One day I hope to have my shit together.” But thinking about it, I enjoy my crazy, unpredictable, hellish little life. Keeps me on my toes, and that’s the best way to be, right?

In the next few years, I plan on graduating nursing school and landing a Labor & Delivery RN position. Building up my portfolio bigger and better than ever, being recognized more than just around my area. Living on my own, no more roommates. And continuing to live my life happily ever after raising hell with Pierceson.

Red modeling a bridal dress in the countrysideHow often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I frequently do promotional modeling. Making appearances at various locations, promoting the job at hand, then leave. I love it. I often do photo shoots too. Mainly glamour, boudior, and promotional. I’d love to venture out and broaden my horizons in that sense. I could rock a catwalk.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

My worst experience hands down was 3 years ago, receiving a fraudulent check that I thought was from an event I’d worked. After I deposited it I found out it was a fraud, and I am the one that got punished for it. Comes with a “Black List” label on Check Systems, and not being able to open a bank account for 5 years. I still have 2 years to go, lucky me!

My best experience would be working for Jägermeister. I have met so many interesting and amazing people working promotions for them. It really put into perspective for me that everyone is their own uniquely beautiful person. Plus, being down at the beach all summer working a fun ass job has its perks too.

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

Well back when I was doing car shows, one of the events consisted of a Dunking Booth that I somehow ended up being volunteered for. Horribly embarrassing. I was wearing a white top, make up running down my face, hair had me looking like a drown cat. Wouldn’t recommend that to anyone!

Red wearing a pink top and black miniskirtIs there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

Yes! Well not change it, but advice I would love to give. To girls new to the industry, or trying to make their way into it; You do not have to take your clothes off to be noticed. And once you do, that’s mainly what you’ll be wanted for. If that’s the route you want to go, make sure it’s classy and tasteful. Something you’ll be proud of!

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I do not play any sports, but if I did have time for volleyball I’d be in there like swimwear! My jobs require me to be on my feet pretty much all day, I could probably run a marathon in stilettos by now and not think twice about it. Come to think of it, I have climbed the side of a cliff in heels for a shoot before!

When it comes to food, I eat whatever I want. But whatever I want doesn’t usually consist of anything greasy, fatty, or sugary anyway. I do love a good pizza though!

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I’m actually super self conscious of my appearance. Weird, right?

Would you change anything about yourself?

As self conscious as I may be, I don’t think I’d actually change anything about myself. Because it makes me who I am. Except there may be a boob job in my future, I would change that!

Do you have any fears or phobias?

I have the sickest shark phobia, but I love the beach! I am terrified yet fascinated. I will not even swim in a pool by myself, no matter the size. I start thinking about Sharks and it freaks me out. If I’m in water, someone has to be with me at all times. Yet, I’m glued to the TV during Shark Week, that’s my shit.

Is Arachidonic Acid the New Hit in Bodybuilding?

You might have heard about a recent study which showed athletes who took Arachidonic Acid on a daily basis for a certain period of time gained some pounds of lean body mass. However, does this mean we should all start stocking up on this supplement?

Despite the fact that it has been shown – both in vitro and in human studies – that Arachidonic Acid stimulates growth in muscle cells, it is not a flawless solution. Arachidonic Acid is an essential substance that is naturally used by the organism as a precursor, converted by the cyclooxygenase enzime (the same enzime that is blocked when you take Advil, Aspirin, Tylenol or similar drugs) into many other substances specially under inflammatory conditions, like when you have an infection or get injured.

Some of these substances are Prostaglandins, which in turn are fatty acid-like substances in charge of regulating inflammation. One of the effects of prostaglandins is vasodilation (widening of blood vessels) and as a result, oxygen and nutrients’ flow to the area under its effects are enhanced. This effect is also seen naturally when muscles are contracting. Perhaps this prostaglandin-conditioned increase in blood flow to the muscles is the direct cause of the muscle cell growth.

Nevertheless, constant or above-the-normal body prostaglandins levels might promote a pro-inflammatory state which in turn could cause increased pain-sensitivity, fever or other discomforts, as explained before. Even more: Arachidonic Acid has been correlated with the spread of prostate cancer, although this might be due to its inherent growth stimulant effect, and cancer being a state where growth processes are disturbed.

Where can you find dietary sources of Arachidonic Acid?

Common sources of Arachidonic Acid include meat, fish, some vegetable oils, and nuts, among others.

What should you do, then?

It looks like when taken with moderation in doses up to 2000 mg a day and during short periods of time, Arachidonic Acid suplementation is safe. Remember to always consult your doctor shall any uncommon effects, signs or symptoms appear!

Interview with Freya Gallows

Freya Gallows is a 24-year old model residing in San Jose, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

I grew up in the Silicon Valley and originally went to school for engineering before opting to spend my youth stumbling around the world without a plan instead. I don’t really live anywhere; I spent the beginning of this year living out of a backpack around Southeast Asia and Australia, went to Reno to spend six months building Embrace, which is a large art Burning Man art project, will spend the fall roaming and camping around California and the winter home-basing in New Mexico in order to hunker down for a few projects that I haven’t been able to work on from the road.

Modeling has been my primary source of income for the last five years, though I’m just as much a dabbler as I am a wanderer, and I’ve also gotten work teaching skiing, practicing Thai massage, harvesting beets, freelance writing, building trails, I did a lot of rock work on the PCT, operating heavy machinery, taking care of horses, and I’ve spent much of the last few years volunteering for Burning Man, for which this year I spent six exhausting months on the build crew for Embrace. It’s both my greatest fortune and somewhat limiting that I do not have a singular passion to devote my focus to, and that my interests diverge into a squillion facets.

Freya Gallows wearing black lingerieWhen, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

The “how” came before I knew the “why”: Initially I didn’t pursue modeling so much give in to it. At twelve, I was a really tall, gawky little string bean and my parents were approached about my potential as a future model, though they thought it’d be damaging for me to enter that world as a kid, and I vehemently agree. Once puberty did its job, I was still tall and thin, but not “agency-standard” tall and thin, so I never looked into modeling as an option until I was approached by a photographer who told me about freelance modeling. After that, it wasn’t until two years after I’d signed up for a Model Mayhem account that I went to a shoot. I was curious and nervous but a bit reluctant.

At that first shoot, I unexpectedly found myself completely transformed, free to explore a character. Modeling has gotten me more acquainted with my own body, and with sides of myself I don’t often see: I’m not someone people would describe as glamorous, girly, flirtatious, or fashionable. It’s play and experimentation, and it’s freeing.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

Well, I’m planning to spend next spring doing a modeling tour up the Atlantic Coast, Florida through Maine, on a bicycle. The prospect’s terrifying to me, which is why I’m making myself do it.

Otherwise, modeling-wise, I’d like to get my butt over to Europe for a tour; I’m thinking next summer I’ll skip Burning Man and do just that. And I’ve always got my mental fangirl-list of models and photographers I want to work with or meet or get to know better.

As for five- or ten-year plans, I don’t believe in planning that far into the future; I’m a creature of change, which I think we all are, if we’re experiencing healthy growth, and have no idea who I’ll be or what I’ll want in five years, it’ll depend on what I experience and learn in the meantime. If I try to limit my five-years-into-the-future self to pursuing what I think I’ll want, right now, then I wouldn’t have as much room to explore or change.

Freya Gallows wearing black dress in black backgroundPlease tell us about the most memorable experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

There was one time I got to crush a car with a track loader. Another time where we were interrupted by a herd of very curious cows; one came up and started licking my elbow. Another time when a hair stylist turned my hair into a three-foot-wide cloud, which I had on the one-hour train ride home. Once I posed in a zentai suit and ankle cuffs in an old elementary school that the photographer had turned into a studio, darkroom, and bondage dungeon, there was still a lot of memorabilia left over from its days as an elementary school, which added a fantastic dimension of creepiness to the place. One shoot had me wielding an oxyacetylene torch. I’ve done multiple-day shoots in national parks, I’ve done shoots where I’ve spent hours in a make-up chair, I’ve been suspended from the ceiling, and I’ve posed for daguerreotypes and ambryotypes.

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

Absolutely. I’ve been trying to change it in my own small ways.

When I modeled in Australia for the first time, I was shocked by how well I was treated; it made me realize fully, for the first time, how much I and other freelance models in America put up with being disrespected, emotionally abused, physically violated, and financially shortchanged, without even realizing it. Of course, many American photographers are great people. But there are also photographers who get away with a lot, especially if they’ve got a big name. I’m sure anyone reading this can think of at least one or two famous photographers whose track records of physical or sexual assault haven’t slowed down their careers.

I’ve tried to combat this by putting my foot down firmly about my own limits; I don’t allow myself to get bullied into anything, from posing outside my comfort zone to lowering my rate for no good reason. It’s taken a lot of trial and error and practice to get to that point, though; at a shoot, it’s hard not to want to be a people-pleaser and just get along, or swallow back frustrations in order to be non-confrontational. Some level of being flexible and easygoing is really important, but it can be hard to find the line between “easy to work with” and “easy to take advantage of”.

Freya Gallows with flowered headDo you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I don’t have an exercise routine, but I try to make activity a lifestyle; I don’t “work out” and what I do doesn’t feel like “exercise”. It’s just play. I climb rocks and trees, swim in rivers and lakes, snowboard and ski, scuba dive, do yoga, go backpacking, and have jumped on random opportunities to do everything from whitewater rafting to trapeze. I walk around small towns and big cities. I run around the beach with a few drinks in my belly. I play with dogs. I lose at push-up contests.

Nutrition’s important to me and I try to eat well overall, but I’m a bit of a gourmand. I don’t spend money on clothes or makeup, but I’ll blow money on really good beer, wine, cheese, or chocolate.

Sometimes people try to completely cut out “bad” foods that they love, like junk food junkies perpetually afraid of relapse. I personally think it’s a lot more effective and healthy to learn to practice moderation, and to find ways of preparing healthy foods so that they taste amazing without overloading them with sugars and fats and starches. I am very much anti starvation diets and cleanses, but I am pro juice fasting: I could talk about juicing all day, but for anyone curious I’d suggest the documentary Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

Well, I can pee standing up. And my first language was Mandarin, before English.

Would you change anything about yourself if you could?

Buddhism discusses cultivating “beginner’s mind”; you can’t fill a full cup. I want to learn and do everything, to go everywhere, to never get too comfortable for too long and to never submit for too long to holding patterns, neuroses, or rationalizations. To always be getting faster and stronger, physically and mentally. To learn to be more compassionate, easygoing, open, and humble, to internalize that no one can “make” me feel or do anything except myself. To get better at living presently and paying attention. Lather, rinse, repeat, until my heart stops.

Interview with Micayla Kay — Colorado-Raised, Hollywood-Trained

Micayla Kay is a 22-year old model residing in Los Angeles, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

I was born in Golden, Colorado and grew up with my amazing parents and my older sister. In high school, I involved myself in theater, dance and cheerleading, but I quit all of that to focus on pageantry. Since I was a little girl, I’ve been a huge bookworm and writer, which led me to my decision to study public relations and journalism in college. Growing up in the beautiful state of Colorado is what infected me with my undying love for the outdoors and fitness, and I think the two family dogs I had are to be credited for my obsession with every dog I lay eyes on.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

My modeling career really got going through pageantry. In 2009, I was crowned as Miss Teen Colorado-World and the ball just kept rolling. As I got older, nothing else ever crossed my mind that I would want to do with my life. By the time I was 18, I was moving out of town on my own and wound up in New York City alone at age 19. Now, at 22, I’m living in Los Angeles doing what I love. I have never felt a stronger, growing connection with anything like I do with modeling and acting.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?Micayla Kay wearing jeans next to a truck

Honestly, ten – and even five – years ago, I never would have thought I would be where I’m at now. I pay a lot of attention to my followers and make sure I’m someone who can be looked at to inspire and motivate others to take chances for their biggest dream. I set really high goals, like appearing in Vogue or walking the Victoria’s Secret runway. I know they are pretty steep, but it keeps my ability to strive and work hard alive and passionate.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

The majority of my video and acting experience is in short films, commercials, music videos, and my favorite – starring in the female prank segment “Pretty Pranks”! As far as modeling goes, I love using my face and body to express my artistic side. I love concept photography, and I love high fashion. My look is pretty easy to work with, so I’m often doing editorials as well. You will never see me doing any erotic or nude photos. That’s just not me.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

I would probably credit my earliest years starting out with modeling as the worst years. I had no idea what I was doing, and the feedback was all pretty embarrassing. But I moved past all of that, and I learned to train myself to be the kind of model I wanted to be all along. Now, the best experiences are the ones in which I’m able to connect on a personal level with my photographers. I’m not too afraid of making a fool out of myself, and if they can laugh with me, it’s easy for me to lose myself in a shoot. I just show up, crank my music, and flirt with the photographer – whether they are male or female! I just dance and have fun, and the results from it are so much better.

Micayla Kay topless in the desertHave you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

There are always crazy things going on behind the scenes. For one shoot, I had to lay in mustard and I ended up getting sick from the smell. I’ve had rabid coyotes on set of a desert shoot. I’ve had a huge snake draped around my body that used its tail to pull my swimsuit bottoms down. Half the time, I’m wishing we had a behind-the-scenes videographer as well as a photographer!

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

I fell in love with the industry for a reason. I love how the sky is the limit, and there are countless creative minds in this world always looking to collaborate and create things that haven’t been done before. I’m also really proud of how far the industry has come in terms of accepting diversity. Of course I come across creepy non-legitimate photographers or talent, and that’s always annoying to have to weed through, but as far as the industry as a whole, I love it for what it is.

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

Fitness and health play a huge part in my everyday life. I am always emphasizing the importance of being fit over skinny. “Skinny” just looks hollow and empty, but “fit” looks powerful, glowing and healthy. I’m a size 0 with a low percentage of body fat, but I don’t consider myself “skinny.” I love to cook and experiment new recipes. I pay attention to the quality of ingredients and nutrients that I’m putting into my body every day – no chemicals, no processed foods, no saturated fats, things like that. I love living in Los Angeles because there are ways and places to exercise all over. I especially like hiking and yoga, but I love going to lift and do cardio at the gym, too. People who follow my social media networks will find my eating habits and fitness motivation pop up on their feeds. I love treating my body right and discovering just how capable it can be.

Micayla Kay wearing snow bootsPlease share something people don’t know about you.

I have a firm belief – and somewhat of an obsession – with the zombie apocalypse. It might derive from The Walking Dead, or from the littering of zombie-like drugged-out homeless people on the streets of LA, but I’m always on the lookout for zombies. You won’t survive if you’re in denial that it’s happening!

Would you change anything about yourself?

If I could change my natural hair color, that would be cool. I hate having to get my hair touched up every couple of months. There are other things – I wish I had fuller lips, bigger eyes, things like that – but I don’t dislike them enough to do anything to change it!

How do you think you are most likely to die?

I like to think I’ll die doing something heroic or cool, but it’s more likely I’ll trip over my dog in a pair of heels and choke on a spoonful of Nutella or something.

Interview with Samm Harrison — Mom, Model, Mogul

Samm Harrison is a 22-year old model residing in San Diego, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

I was born and raised in Palm Springs, California and always had the itch to get out. My big Broadway dreams led me to move to Los Angeles at 18, only to find out there’s no theater there! Seattle was a better fit and is also the birthplace of my modeling career. When I got pregnant with my daughter, I moved back to California to be closer to family and focus on maternity modeling as well as later producing fashion shows on my own.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

Theater has a funny schedule in that you audition in the summer for an entire year’s worth of work. I had no intention of becoming a model, but while I was waiting for my big break to Broadway, I decided to fill the time with modeling. It caught fire and I ended up loving it!

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

Having a child had really thrown all my goals for a loop. I had planned on modeling long enough to see my face on a billboard and singing on Broadway until I died. Problem is, you can’t tap dance when you’re 9 month pregnant! Now I only focus on my performance passions when I see profitability and long term see myself behind the curtain, producing shows and managing careers so that other people can achieve their dreams. In the meantime, being an Iggy Azalea impersonator is a pretty amazing gig!

VH- 44-1How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I’m very particular with my modeling. I want to be proud of what my face is attached to! Sometimes I have outbursts of inspiring projects and I’ll go to a different photoshoot every day for weeks and sometimes I’ll go months without being in front of a camera. I strive to never do anything average, I want to inspire people with things they’ve never seen before. Every image should be striking.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

I love to work with my favorite photographers over and over again so that we experience a journey together. The most beautiful case is having the same photographer shoot me before I got pregnant, during maternity and afterwards with my daughter. We shared so many special moments and he really got to see my life full circle!

Because I’m so careful with what projects I attach myself to, I haven’t had many bad experiences. If there is ever any nonsense, I speak up early or detach myself from the project entirely. I’m a mom now. I don’t put up with BS.

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

Once during a photography workshop I was assigned to a group of 20 or so photographers and we had to roam the streets of downtown Seattle while they worked on their natural lighting techniques. It looked like paparazzi were following me around! On top of that, the group was a fun bunch and they were really playing it up with the staring bystanders making comments like, “Have you heard her new album?” or “I can’t believe she’s really here!” This was very early in my modeling career and strangers were whipping out their cellphones to take pictures because they were convinced I was famous!!

Samm Harrison pregnant in old-fashioned dressIs there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

I personally stand in oppositions of the fat model movement that’s sweeping the industry. I understand that women come in all shapes and sizes and no woman should ever look like they snort coke like it’s food, but preaching that all body types are beautiful also has a slippery slope that I think everyone is ignoring: health concerns. Don’t kill yourself to be skinny, but don’t use the “Everyone’s Beautiful” movement as an excuse to be lazy and ignore your diet and exercise routine. There should be an exclusivity to modeling, and that’s why I’m paid for it and Sally Somebody isn’t.

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

Nutrition is very important to me! I was a vegan before pregnancy and always took my diet very seriously. I definitely don’t deny myself enjoying fare like coffee and chocolate, but I also know when to say no. I have the same relationship with exercise: I’m not an every day activity person, but I know when I’ve been too lazy and need to kick my butt into gear.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I never make promises. I don’t take promises lightly, which is why I never make them. I would only promise something I’m 100% committed to not letting fail.

Would you change anything about yourself?

As beautiful of an experience as pregnancy was, I could do without these stretchmarks! Or maybe I’d like some big white Chicklet teeth. Yea, definitely the teeth.

Are you currently in a relationship? How would you describe your partner?

I am madly, deeply, truly in love with the girl of my dreams: my daughter! I wear a ring on my wedding finger of her name because she’s the only one I’ll ever need. Being pregnant was like sharing the world’s most intimate experience with someone you’ve never met.
This isn’t to say I wouldn’t mind a man sweeping me off my feet though.

Interview with Kiernan Kit

Kiernan Kit is a 23-year old model residing in Los Angeles, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

One of the prominent aspects of any good interview comes from a woman or man with a great story. My story is unique and the quality of life I live is only striven out of the hardship I’ve endeavored. Some hardships ruin people because they loose themselves in the thrash of the tornado. Only recently, within the last year, have I really found myself and have become one with my true identity. I’ve always been “too happy” or smile too much. Something I’ve been told my whole life. There’s nothing wrong with being happy. My strive and crave for real life was born quite some time ago but like any form of life, just needed time to grow and develop. You may be wondering why I would cover myself in tattoos. I see myself as a canvas and an expression of my life. I put myself through college by managing and tattooing in a tattoo shop in Tucson, Az. Now coincidentally all 4 of my artists are on this next season of Ink Master. I guess I hand picked all of my artists quite nicely. Now I live in the beautiful Los Angeles where I get to enjoy all of the great things that California has to offer. Within the last 3 years I’ve really developed an understanding and love of the city. Amazing hiking trails in Malibu, yacht parties in the Marina, penthouse music video shoots in downtown, and all of glitz and glamour of Hollyhood. Working in the event world And being in the industry I see how alcohol and drugs ruin people so I choose to not have any vices. I love life for what it is and don’t want to escape from it’s true beauty. Let’s have some fun ladies and gentlemen. Overall I live to be happy, I love to adventure, so let’s laugh the night away.

Kiernan Kit wearing a blue dressWhen, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

My first commercial was when I was 9 months old. A local sushi commercial with a high pitched female narrating my reactions as I stuffed my face with rice balls. Pretty adorable. Along the years my parents put me in modeling, acting, and dancing classes. Preparing me for more than I thought at the time being in little old Tucson, Az. I really took my modeling to the next level after I turned 18 and really networked my way to using and abusing everything I could in the industry of Az. Traveling to Phoenix regularly for paid gigs. All of it preparing me for what I’m in the middle of now in Los Angeles.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

I love picking a hobby, perfecting it, and moving on. Modeling is a never ending moldable creature. Always something new and exciting. In 5 years I see myself sitting in the audience of the golden globe awards waiting to hear my name for the next big feature. Very plausible since I’ve been in 3 features already with prominent roles. Still waiting for them to come out in theaters. In 10 years I see myself traveling on a sail boat through the Caribbean as my 3 houses in Malibu are rented out making me money on the go. Create a vision and then execute. Do it up people.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

All I have time for alongside my business is attending at least 2 shoots a week that usually consist of vintage product line shoots or alternative fashion and glamour. I was recently in a huge fashion show downtown that was absolutely everything I could dream of. I love that I’ve gotten to the point of paid assignments only but every so often if it’s a really good concept will I do trade for print. Achieving goals everyday.

Kiernan Kit inside a cagePlease tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

I hear horror stories all of the time. A great one from my mother who grew up in Hollywood actually. ” I’m so proud of you sweety. I remember I walked into a house for a shoot once and there was dog crap all over the floor. Should’ve walked out then but instead continued on in hopes for a good shoot. Then he insisted I sit down. Then persisted that I rub him off then ran out.” I replied “Yeah mom I guess I’m proud of me too haha”. Love her until I die. I really personally haven’t had any really bad experiences except for a previous agent I had that was trying to push me in the adult entertainment world and I pushed back. Hard. I’ve met amazing people along the way and of course not so great. You learn how to weave through the maze of uncertainty.

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

I’ve had endless amounts of funny moments. One in particular was when I was in the middle of a video interview for a contest. One of the categories was dancing and rocking out to a rock song of your choice. I picked crazy bitch by Buck Cherry. First song that popped into my head. I’m rocking out hard at this point thrashing my hair around having a great time and then BOOM. Smacked my head on one of the overhead lights and knocked myself out. Woke up on the floor and started uncontrollably laughing so hard. Everyone in the room was dying laughing seeing I was ok. Catching that moment on camera was amazing. I’ll never let adrenaline take over my body again like that I’ll tell you that much.

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

The snooty superficial persona that girls think they have the rights too. Good luck with that in life ladies. Being anything other than down to earth and cordial just looks awful to me.

I’m actually sitting in the passenger seat right now on my way to power yoga in Santa Monica. I’m constantly kicking my own butt whether it’s running on the trails through Laurel Canyon or going to the gym. Love being in shape and eating healthy. Speaking of, probably going to enjoy a big fat ahi tuna salad after yoga. Yummmm.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

Most people don’t know that I used to be a pole fitness instructor so I basically defy gravity on a pole. Just saying.

Would you change anything about yourself (physical or otherwise) if you could?

Hmm… Nope. I’ve developed my look and my life to be exactly what I want. Even got myself invisalign because I wasn’t exceptionally happy with my smile but now I am!

Have you ever gone without wearing underwear all day? Why & what did you do?

I try and avoid underwear at all costs. They’re constricting, itchy and bacteria harvesters. Unless I’m wearing jeans. No body likes a chafed vag. Oh wow I’m classy. Enjoy!

I choose to enjoy the challenges life brings and reach out to others by spreading love.

Magda Lena in a wheat fieldWhen, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I began modeling at the age of 14. Participating in as many shoots as possible. While attending beauty school working towards my aesthetics license more opportunities opened up and I became involved in multiple fashion runway events. Modeling is amusing to me as expressions can be accentuated through snap shots. True beauty can be captured.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

In five to ten years I see my self graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of California Santa Cruz. I will be working towards my Naturopathic Medicine License. I will continue to grow in all aspects of life. I see myself partnered with a reputable model agency, working and expanding in all areas.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I am currently modeling approximately once a week. It will usually be a paid photoshoot, sometimes if a photographer has an exquisite idea I will be ok to trade for photos. I am fairly new to this industry and am happy to get as much exposure as possible. Since I am a full time student I mainly do photo-shoots for local artists. I enjoy pin up shoots and playing out characters through my photos.

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

Judging someone’s beauty based on their physical appearance can be deceiving. Everyone is truly beautiful at heart.

Magda Lena face closeupDo you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I love to kick box. I started about a year ago and it is fantastic. It is a unique exercise because you are not only exercising your muscles but also your brain. I love learning new combos, it is a great way to release energy! I also love to surf. My mother taught me to surf when I was 9 years old. Ever since, my love for the ocean has continued to grow. I enjoy hiking and practicing yoga.
I do my best to eat locally grown organic produce. I have adopted a gluten free, ketogenic diet. My diet consists mostly of healthy fats, moderate amounts of protein and the rest vegetables. I perform optimally when my body is fueled by ketones, rather than glucose. Coconut oil is one of my favorites as well as a concentrated form, Brain octane from the Bullet Proof executive website. I take many daily supplements, the key players are Vitamin D & C, glutathione, and Omegas derived from Algae to optimize brain function. I mix a daily cocktail mixed with spirulina & chlorella. Probiotics are taken to assist with digestion. Astragalus, Ashwaganda, and resveratrol are a few others. The list goes on but I won’t leave you too baffled.
They key with optimizing my nutrition has been to truly listen to my body and find what works best for me.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I love to be silly. I am naturally energetic and laughing is my drug.

Would you change anything about yourself (physical or otherwise) if you could?

I would not change anything about my physical appearance, if so I would not truly be myself.

What features do you look for in a partner?

In a partner I look for adventurous and outgoing qualities. I look for someone to take my adventurous side to the next level. I like a tough guy who isn’t afraid to be weak at times. I am a romantic person and therefore I like to be charmed. Cooking is essential. My ideal man doesn’t have to be a master chef. A simple candlelight dinner and I will be pleased. I pay great attention to what I put into my body and my ideal man would do the same. Realistically love prevails all.

Interview with Heather Ford

Heather Ford is a 23-year old model residing in West Hollywood, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi I’m Heather! I am a true original Southern California girl who grew up in Simi Valley, which is located in Ventura County. Most people don’t know what I’m talking about when I say Simi Valley because it is such a small city so I always add in the Ventura County! I absolutely love living in California and feel truly blessed to have grown up here. What is nice is that most of my family also lives here including my parents and grandparents. I am extremely close with my family and I consider my mom to be my best friend.

I am a huge outdoorsy kind of girl. I love horseback riding, dirt bike riding, camping, going to the beach, hiking, snowboarding, and going boating on the lake. In addition to modeling, I also have my Bachelors Degree in Communication and I have worked as a Healthcare Consultant for the past four years.

Heather Ford wearing a jeans jacketWhen, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I have always loved being in front of the camera ever since I was very little. It was hard for me though because I don’t have parents that participated in the “arts” so they never really supported my dreams of becoming a professional model and actress.

I started putting myself out there right when I turned 18 and I’ve had a few ups and downs because of going to college and working, but I have been doing more acting and modeling work recently and have been the happiest I have ever been!

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

My ultimate goal is to be a successful working actor. I don’t need or want all the fame, I just want to be working! I appreciate every work opportunity I get.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I am modeling at least a few times a week. My schedule has never been busier. It is true that when you put your all into whatever you want to do, you get much more opportunities.
I do several catalog photo-shoots for clothing companies, and I do a lot of acting, which is my main passion.

Sometimes I will do photo-shoots with photographers just to update their portfolios and I also just recently participated in walking in my first fashion show for a charity event, which was so nerve-wracking!

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

Luckily, all of my shoots have been absolutely amazing. I have worked with some awesome photographers who have made me always feel completely comfortable and they do what they say they will.

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

I was shooting on the beach with one of my favorite photographers and I kept noticing these two boys kept walking by. The eventually got very close to where they could hear what my photographer was saying. So my photographer decided to play a joke and started saying things like “Let’s do this Heather. You know what Playboy wants. Give me the sexy Playmate stuff we need and so…” So these boys immediately thought I was a Playmate and I just went with it being as I was doing an implied topless pose at the moment anyways. They all wanted to take a picture with me and were asking what month I was. I just laughed and it completely made my day.

I love when my photographers crack and make jokes and make shooting so much fun!

Heather Ford wearing a pink bikiniIs there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

I would change the body image part of modeling. I have always worried about my body and whether or not it was good enough. Now that I have grown up a bit from when I first started modeling, I embrace my body now and that’s why I’ve gotten so into fitness. I don’t like being extremely skinny and I absolutely love my muscle tone and curves.

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I am a big fitness enthusiast! I love love love working out! I go to the gym and lift weights 6 times a week. I also love doing yoga, it is one of the only things that actually can completely relax me.

I am part of a professional fitness team called Team Edge, and we are bikini competitors for NPC. We live a very disciplined lifestyle and follow a strict meal plan and workout plan. It’s very hard, and not for the faint of hearts, but I absolutely love it! And I love the fact that you can actually see my abs.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

Something that most people would never know about me is that I am a huge worrier. In fact, I worry about worrying too much!

People would never guess this about me because I always try to be positive and upbeat about everything and I try to live in the Now, but in reality I am always thinking about what could happen in the next month or two.

Would you change anything about yourself (physical or otherwise) if you could?

If I could change anything about myself, I would change the fact that I am terrified to take risks in life.

I know that the best things come out of leaving your comfort zone, but it is so hard for me to do that sometimes. I wish that I had the courage to take more risks. I am working on it every day!

What is your guilty pleasure?

My guilty pleasure is eating sweets! Oh man! If I could eat sweets all day, everyday, I totally would. I think I am a fat kid at heart, because if I started listing off all of my favorite foods, you would think I’m 400lbs.

I absolutely love frozen yogurt, ice cream, donuts, chocolate, cinnamon rolls, pancakes, french toast, and the list goes on and on and on.

It’s very hard for me sometimes to be so disciplined with my diet because I am not supposed to have any sugar at all. Sometimes I do have to cheat in order to keep my sanity!

Interview with Mimi Palafox

Mimi Palafox is a 19-year old model residing in Fremont, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

Hello! My name is Dominique, but I’ve gone by Mimi since I was very young. I was born in the Bay Area and began acting in Kindergarden. I started taking classes which helped me learn how to model. I’m studying to become a Fashion Designer, but modeling will always be one of my favorite hobbies.

Mimi Palafox wallking on a pipeWhen, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I kinda just threw myself into it by begging my mom to sign me up for classes! I was really young when I started and I’m glad I have gotten a chance to learn as much as I can. Having an agency for a while definitely helped me develop more and I have worked with some amazing people.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

I hope to own my own business and on my downtime model for photographers. My dream would to be to become an alternative model and travel, but I would like to get more in shape and get covered before I can accomplish that.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I really enjoy anything artsy! Big hair and makeup, with dramatic poses are always my favorite. I also enjoy pin up and anything with a more darker theme. I would love to find some photographers that specialize in just that, because I’ve got a lot of clever poses practiced already.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

The best experience would be working for Pixar as I posed as a “cheerleader” for Monsters University. I got to see everything backstage and wore an official Disney costume which was pretty amazing. Sadly I’ve had many bad experiences, although I think that good and bad come hand in hand, and it’s mainly come from people not being professional. I love it when everyone is focused and professional in a shoot.

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

I wish that there were more opportunities for alternative crowds up in Northern California. It seems as though it’s really hopping in Southern California and would love to see that trend start moving up.

Mimi Palafox checking on her thighDo you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I grew up running around from auditions to soccer practice and have learned that balance is key. I workout nearly everyday and hope to work my butt off to attain my ideal body shape. I usually eat sandwiches, light pastas, salads and on the occasion, a juicy cheeseburger. I’m definitely a foodie, but I try limiting my fat and sugar intake. I think nutrition and exercise is vital to maintaining a healthy and happy lifestyle. You just got to see what works for you!

Would you change anything about yourself (physical or otherwise) if you could?

I think that you should try growing everyday and evolve into the person you want to be. There are some things I wish I could change about me and there are things I don’t have the ability to change. I just need to accept the person I am, love myself, and try to change for the better.

How do you think you are most likely to die?

Such a great question! I think my ideal death would be at an old age surrounded by the people I love. I want to see nothing but smiles when I leave this earth. But I will probably end up dying by doing some sort of extreme sport that’s too extreme for me to handle!
