Interview with Sophia Harris — Childhood outcast to model

Sophia Harris is a 16-year old model residing in Denver, Colorado.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

I was born in South Brisbane,Australia-the home of my father but moved back to Dubai in the UAE within weeks of being born. My father is Australian and my mother is a South African and Canadian who moved to America when she was 12 year ols. My four siblings and I however grew up in Dubai and the rest of my family live there still, at 16 I decided to make the move to America by myself to finish high school here. My profession is simply a high school student which is pretty much a full time job in itself but over the last six years of my life I have acted professionally in short films and professional plays as well as modeling in my spare time.

As you can probably tell I am incredibly interested in acting. I have six years of professional training in the Stanislavski method and hope to pursue acting full time once I graduate high school. My other hobbies include running and writing, as a former track and field athlete I developed an addiction to it and go crazy if I can’t run at least five times a week. In addition to acting I hope to become a screenwriter so I dedicate several hours a week to developing and writing my screenplays; I have thirteen so far!.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I first began modeling four years ago at the age of 12, at the time I was living in Dubai, a city fast becoming one of the fashion capitals of the world. I don’t have a particularly interesting scouting story – I was asked one day at a makeup convention by the director of a modeling agency if I had any interest in modeling. After shooting my portfolio and signing with them my career begun! I don’t really know why I begun modeling but trust me -no one was more shocked than I when I did!

As a child my appearance was made fun of constantly – I had curly red hair, extremely pale skin, freckles and hooded almond shaped blue eyes. I stood out among a sea of brunettes and blondes with their tanned skin and round eyes. It made me an easy target and resulted in needless bullying. So the idea of my appearance ever earning me money seems like a ridiculous idea to me initially; however, as I soon discovered it was all the things I had been made fun of for that made me so successful.

Sophia Harris showing her long hair and a hatWhat are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

In five years I want to be living in LA, finding at least some success as an actress in film and television hopefully negotiating the sale of one of my screenplays! As a person, I hope to become less shy and introverted -I am a tried and true INTJ personality type!. I would also like to be able to say that I had maintained my morals and continued to conduct myself in a dignified manner.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

Previously I modeled more, every other week probably. It may not seem like much but I did it at the same time as I was attending school full time. I mainly do commercial photoshoots but I have previously done editorials. Unfortunately I am far too short for the catwalk!

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

The best experience I have ever had in modeling was several years ago. The photoshoot was for the Hasselblad Camera and was titled ‘We’re sisters not colors’. Two other models, one black and one Asian, and I all dressed up with elaborate hairstyles and makeup had colored powder thrown at us and we were encouraged to play in ti whilst pictures were taken. The photos that came out were so beautiful and real whilst still promoting the idea of equality and unity among people.

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

Thankfully I don’t think I’ve ever experienced anything truly bizarre or embarrassing throughout my career. However working in Dubai was defiantly a unique experience in itself as the way business is conducted is completely different!

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

I would most certainly change the height and size requirements. The proportions they ask for promote an incredibly unhealthy lifestyle and really encourage many girls to starve themselves.

Sophia Harris hiding her face behind a fanDo you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I run frequently as well as doing strength and toning exercises daily. I usually eat a piece of gluten free bread with nutella on it -love that stuff!- for breakfast, a small meal consisting of protein and vegetables for lunch and a larger meal consisting of protein, carbohydrates and vegetables for dinner. Throughout the day I get incredibly hungry so I snack on fruit and granola bars as well as chocolate coconut milk. On the whole, I try to avoid gluten and dairy as I don’t react well to either of them. Throughout the week I eat consistently and healthily but I allow myself one treat on the weekend -it’s all about moderation! Nutrition and exercise are incredibly important to me because in order to be successful in this industry I have to maintain my weight and body constantly. However, I am also a firm believer in staying healthy and not starving yourself -you will not model forever but you will have to live with your body forever. So why destroy it in exchange for a few years of success?

Please share something people don’t know about you.

Most people don’t know that I attended a British Curriculum school for most of my education resulting in my slightly warped accent and vocabulary!

Would you change anything about yourself?

If I could change one thing about myself it would be my hair-I would kill for thinner, straight hair! Curly hair is such a pain and mine is far too long and thick to be able to do anything with!

Do you have any fears or phobias?

I have a legitimate phobia, and I took psychology for two years so I know the difference between a fear and a phobia, of crustaceans. As in crabs and lobsters. Just seeing them results in a full blown, completely legitimate panic attack and I just can’t even. I’m also terrified of moths and butterflies, something I only discovered after being taken on a trip to a butterfly pavilion. Cue screaming and crying.

Interview with Chantel Heinen — Small Town Girl Turned Big City Model

Chantel Heinen is a 20-year old model residing in Oakland, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Chantel, also know as Chanteezy. I grew up in Avon Minnesota, a small town of roughly 1,500 people. Coming from a small town I always had this feeling of boredom. I enjoyed spending my free time dancing on my own, or taking classes, but when I wasn’t dancing I always felt like I was missing out on something. I always knew there were bigger cities, bigger states, and bigger things out there for me. I long awaited the day I could leave little Avon and move forward in life. As a junior in High School I went to a Performing Arts school for dance in the Minneapolis area where I lived on campus. Living away from home at 16 was such a blessing! Although I love my family, it really pushed me to find myself and take risks, and I truly believe if I hadn’t left Avon I would still be stuck in Minnesota now.

After graduation I promptly moved to San Francisco. I knew I wanted to be in California and after doing research San Francisco seemed like the best place to start. I have been here 2 years and I am loving it! My modeling career is taking off, I am networking my butt off and just enjoying life!

Chantel Heinen holding a staircaseWhen, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

As cliche as it sounds I first knew I wanted to be a model when ‘America’s Next Top Model’ first aired. I was really young, but I knew that was the career for me. The models always looked like they were having so much fun, and I always dreamed of being on the cover of a magazine for the world to see and appreciate. For a long time I kept pushing to the back of my head and telling myself it was impossible, that I didn’t have what it took. Recently within the last year or so I have really decided to push myself. I am coming to peace with who I am and how I look.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

I would love to be a full time, professional model in five years. My dream is to model, and only model! I hate working 9-5 jobs, I wasn’t built to sit at a desk all day, I need adventure and challenge.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

Right now I have a full-time desk job, so I don’t have as much time as I would like to dedicate to bookings. I do at least one photoshoot a week, and more if my schedule allows. At this point in my career I am focusing mainly on print work. I am still building a portfolio but I find what I am being booked for most often is catalog, and commercial, although I am open to all and am eager to start doing more high fashion!

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

It is difficult to narrow down experiences I have had to best and worst. I have yet to have a bad experience at a shoot or on a job. I suppose the worst experience would be fighting myself on the days I have a shoot but don’t feel my prettiest, it is tough sometimes to break out of my own head and just perform whether I feel good or not.

The best experiences I have had are really just meeting clients, hearing their vision and knowing that I am helping them with it. It is also a great feeling to see the end result and be amazed at my own photo!

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

No.

Chantel Heinen topless wearing jeansIs there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

Like many others I would say I wish the industry wasn’t so strict about size. I feel like models can be very hard on themselves. We compare ourselves to each other and sometimes go to drastic measures to look the way we think we should. I feel like the industry would be much healthier if there wasn’t such an emphasis on specific measurements.

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I don’t practice any sports other than dance, but I do enjoy a good gym sesh! I hate cardio so I spend most of my time in the gym lifting weights; any cardio time is typically spent on the stair master!
I eat fairly clean throughout the week, everything in moderation is my motto. I do indulge in sweets here and there, but I like to make smart choices for breakfast lunch and dinner. It’s extremely important to keep my body in tip top condition, my body is my instrument and I need to keep it clean, because I use it all day everyday and I don’t have enough time in my life to be getting sick!

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I’m a kickbutt baker.

Would you change anything about yourself?

I can be very shy when around groups of people or new faces. I sometimes wish I could be more outgoing in that sense.

How do you think you are most likely to die?

Well I have had several dreams of myself or a friend driving on a highway when suddenly we turn too fast on a bridge or end up flying overboard, so I am starting to think that is how I’m going to die!

Interview with Alycia Dean — Actress. Model. Performer.

Alycia Dean is a 22-year old model residing in Los Angeles, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

I am just a small-town girl from Morgantown, West Virginia with big-city dreams. I moved to Los Angeles, California about a year ago to pursue them. When I’m not acting or modeling, I enjoy watching cartoons, spending time with people I love, and long walks on the beach, seriously!.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I had been modeling for the fashion design program at West Virginia University, and found myself missing it so much when school let out for the summer. I started traveling to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to shoot with the photographers up there, and got involved with local fashion shows as well. I don’t remember exactly when that summer it happened, but I developed a deep love for modeling. It’s been a passion of mine ever since.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

Personally, I just want to be happy. I know it sounds cliche, but it is the most honest answer I know to give. Professionally, the same applies. I could be raking in millions of dollars, strutting my stuff down the red carpet and gracing the cover of magazines. But if I’m not happy doing it, then it’s all for nothing. That being said, I don’t see my happiness leaving any time soon!

Alycia Dean sitting on the kitchenHow often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I try to model as often as I possibly can. If it’s a slow month for calls, I go out and find work myself! Commercial modeling is definitely my forte. I get told all the time that I have a ‘very commercial look’- which I take as a compliment! There’s a lot of money in commercial work! But I love shooting fashion and editorial as well. It’s a challenge, and keeps me fresh as a model. I love the entire learning process of delving into something so outside my comfort zone.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

I was on my way to Pittsburgh for my very first shoot outside of the university program, when I ran over a tire on the freeway, like a moron. I completely destroyed the underneath of my car, and I couldn’t make it to the shoot. I was mortified, but the photographer I was scheduled to shoot with was extremely gracious and forgiving; She even offered to pick me up! We ended up rescheduling and then shooting again several times after that. I consider myself lucky that this is my worst modeling experience, especially considering some of the horror stories I’ve heard.

Some of the best experiences I’ve had modeling were in fashion shows. In that moment, when you’re walking down the runway, everything else gets blacked out and you feel invincible. It’s an incredible adrenaline rush. Those moments are probably tied with being published in nationally sold, Gladys Magazine. Seeing myself on paper, in a spread, was definitely a moment too.

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

Oh, I’m horrible at sports. I’m so not athletic and wish terribly that I was. At the moment, I’m trying to learn how to long board, and that struggle is definitely real. I danced for several years as a girl, but dropped the classes when I got really involved with theater. I try to eat healthy, but if you put a bowl of ice cream in my face, it’s over.

Alycia Dean closing her eyesPlease share something people don’t know about you.

The first acting role I ever had was playing a police officer in the ensemble of ‘Pirates of Penzance’. The majority of us were girls dressed up as guys, and we had to sing the song really low and manly. I have the fondest memories of us drawing mustaches on each other backstage with eyeliner. I couldn’t stop laughing and my mustache came out pretty funky. Anyways, I don’t think many people know this about me, and it’s fun to reflect and see how far I’ve come as a performer.

Would you change anything about yourself?

As confident as I like to think I am, of course there are things that I struggle with about myself. There always have been. In middle school, it was my big lips. In highschool it was that stupid bump in my nose. Right now, it’s my small chest. But guess what? Now, I love my big lips. And that stupid bump in my nose? It makes me unqiue. And I’m sure I’ll get over the ‘big boob complex’ eventually, too. I’m slowly learning that gratitude has an insanely powerful impact on insecurity. The more I thank God for the wonderful things I am blessed with, the less I worry about those that I think I’m not. And there’s so much more to this world than the way we look. True beauty is on the inside, anyways!

How do you deal with rejection in the industry?

I remind myself over and over again that it’s not personal. I remind myself of how many beautiful, talented and successful models and actress were told ‘No, no, no’ before they got their ‘yes’. I remind myself that it’s a journey and to enjoy the ride. Just by auditioning and working in Los Angeles, I’m already living my dream. Again, gratitude is the key to all kinds of happiness.

Interview with Alex — Tattooed/pierced model

Alex is a 24-year old model residing in Los Angeles, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

Born in Detroit, MI., I am the youngest sibling to three older brothers. My hobbies and interests include painting, singing, beauty, spending time with my friends and boyfriend, and taking care of my two kitties. Currently working as a server at a popular venue in downtown LA, as well as a promotional model. Have worked both as a butcher and a Geek Squad Agent.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I had been in love with the idea of modeling since the age of 12. I can’t accurately describe my passion for modeling – for me it has always been so much more than being a pretty face. The artistry, and emotion an image can provoke was what has always drawn me in. I was unable to find a reputable agency in Michigan due to lack of resources until the age of 18, when I got introduced into promotional modeling and met the first photographer who wanted to jump start my portfolio. After that, I continued marketing myself for 3 years and became well-known as a model in Michigan. By the age of 22 I signed with the most reputable agency in Michigan, but there was a lack of work, thusly prompting my move to Sunny Los Angeles!

Alex standing on top of used tiresWhat are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

My lifetime goal has always been to be a professional model. Where I am working as a model full-time with the resources to also continue expanding my portfolio collaborating amazing creative teams. I absolutely still see myself modeling 5 to 10 years from now, whether or not it’s on a professional basis.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I usually have about 4 modeling gigs a month. These jobs are usually based on beauty work, commercial jobs, glamour work, and portfolio building for upcoming makeup artists and hair stylists.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

There are a few photographers I have worked with since I had first started, and these photographers have been strong advocates for my career and continue to inspire me and help me grow as a model.

I’ve had my fair share of poor encounters with photographers, and all of these collaborations have one thing in common: lack of professionalism. I have worked with photographers who have refused to share photos, although the shoot was based on trade, because they may have been acting in a way I felt was inappropriate making me uncomfortable, and making that discomfort known. Regardless of how attractive you feel a model is, or the “vibe” you may feel you’re getting from a model, it never excuses acting unprofessionally.

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

I worked a shoot at White Sands National monument in New Mexico, which was one of the coolest shoots I’ve done to date. And also the most challenging. There were quite a few things working against myself and the team – the blistering heat, the sun beaming off the white sand, and the strong gusts of wind. The wind would push and pull, making posing difficult and keeping equipment secure and safe just as challenging. The bright light was posing a problem to my sensitive eyes, keeping them open and still engaging was not an easy task. But by far, the worst challenge was just the sunlight itself. I am a very pale person, so I came prepared. I slathered myself in SPF 70 MULTIPLE times during the five hour shoot. I thought I was safe. Nope. It wasn’t until later in the evening I started to notice the redness… The next day, I was unable to move from how sore my body was. It seemed as though I hadn’t been wearing sunscreen at all, I was so burnt. I can’t even imagine how bad it would have been if we hadn’t been as prepared!

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

There are a few things I would change; primarily, the beauty standard. There are lots of arguments on what beauty is, and I don’t feel the modeling industry always accurately captures it. Men and women of all shapes, sizes, and colors should be accepted and celebrated in this industry. Beauty is absolutely something that emulates from within, and I feel the modeling industry should focus more on that aspect than on what is currently described as their “standard of beauty.”

Alex face closeupDo you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I enjoy hiking and bouldering very much. For those of you that don’t know, bouldering is essentially rock climbing for beginners. Other than that I may practice a bit of plyometrics, along with yoga.

As far as nutrition, I’m a bit of a smoothie fiend. Starting my day with a healthy smoothie gives me more energy than a cup of coffee – and it lasts all day.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

A fun fact not many people know is that I played drums and sang in a band for about a year. Fortunately for our lead singer and guitarist, she was discovered by a famous musician and began to tour around the country with him.

Would you change anything about yourself?

If I could change anything, it would be how critical I am on myself. I do feel it is important to be critical, but I feel I often go overboard with my criticism of myself and it often makes me feel as though no work I have ever done is good enough. Its upside is that it drives me to continuously want to do better.

Have you ever gone without wearing underwear all day? Why & what did you do?

I go without underwear almost everyday, haha. Too much information, perhaps. I feel underwear are mostly overrated and a nuisance! Most clothes fit better without them, thongs are uncomfortable, and I can’t stand the way panty lines look!

Maria Breese is a 25-year old model residing in Los Angeles, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m a southern girl from the small town of Vienna, VA, right outside Washington DC. I began dancing, modeling, singing and acting at a very young age. Both my parents worked in the industry and have always been very supportive of my love of the arts. While I no longer professionally dance, I still love doing hip-hop and jamming out to country music! Currently, modeling and acting are my main focus…can’t wait to see what new adventures lay ahead.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I started modeling as a child doing catalogue shoots. I kept dabbling in it throughout highschool, but really found some success in college while I was in Tampa! Since then I’ve had the privilege of showing up in several major ads and campaigns.

Maria Breese wearing jean shortsWhat are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

In five to ten years I really see myself continuing to work on my career and hopefully having a family to support.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

Recently I’ve been focusing mostly on commercial, print and acting.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

To be honest, I’ve been very lucky and fortunate in my experiences in the industry. The best experience I’ve had so far was during a shoot for iStock photography. It was on the beach and the photographers and models were just very fun and inspiring to work with!

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

Once during a commercial shoot for Checkers, I got to eat icecream and chicken sandwiches all day…does that count? It was awesome

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

Just how critical everyone is. It’s important to have standards, of course, but sometimes it comes with consequences.

Maria Breese face closeupDo you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I’ve been a dancer since the age of 3 and continue to dance now for fun and exercise. I love running and being outside. I’m also an avid yogi…it’s so relaxing!

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I often get parking tickets…I have probably had over 200 so far.

Would you change anything about yourself?

I think everyone wants to change something about themselves…but it’s important in life to just always be the best you that you can be. If you don’t feel healthy, you have the power to change that!

What is your guilty pleasure?

I have a ravenous sweet tooth. Regardless of how I feel, I always have room for dessert.

Interview with Cynthia Aileen — A Dancefloor Enabler

Cynthia Aileen is a 24-year old model residing in San Francisco, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi, how do you do!

Let me start off by saying I was born a male. Just kidding. Now that I have your attention…

I was born in the up-and-coming city of Oakland and have lived all around the Bay Area -The Yay to be politically correct-. Please don’t be the ignorant type that automatically cringes with you hear the word “Oakland.” It’s a bustling place with a true urban feel and all types of vivacious characters. Oh, and with a Whole Foods!

Mamasan and Papasan are divorced, but ironically working symbiotically together in the same workplace. My dad is actually half Chinese and my mother is Scottish. My mom is currently at Burning Man without moi. My sis just had a baby boy named Brady who is actually not so disturbing looking, and my brother owns his own bar… and no I don’t get a plethora of free drinks.

Furthermore, I have a grown up job in the Financial District of San Francisco by day, and DJ at night, and model or act somewhere in between. Kinda that jack of all trades type, ya dig?

I love DJing, manipulating music, and witnessing the enjoyment from people when they hear a good beat. It gives me chills. I’ll dance anywhere, without music, on the spot. Dare me?

I see as many concerts and shows as my wallet allows me, I have 3 tattoos with more in the works, I love sour candy, and I have a German Shepherd who is the love of my life, along with my boyfriend, yes babe. I love vintage anything and play zombie video games quite often. Essential oils are the bees knees.

Cynthia Aileen in a gardenWhen, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I really wanted to eat cotton balls for the rest of my life.

No, just kidding again. I stumbled upon Model Mayhem when I was about 22. On the docket was always that want for a chance to model or act for fun. So I signed up and starting getting some hits right away, I don’t know how. I remember my first photographer. He was Vietnamese, hilarious, and made me feel super comfortable. I didn’t tell him it was my first time. Nonetheless, he couldn’t tell. He fed me chips. Spicy ones. Score.

Then, a friend, and still one, Dominic was casting for a short film. He found me on Model Mayhem, chose me without meeting me, interviewing me, knowing me whatsoever and said you need to be my leading actress in this film. The character was a bad ass Ryan Gosling in Drive and Rooney Mara in Girl with the Dragon Tattoo type. I was on board. I was amazed he could read me from my profile like that. He gave me the script, we filmed in a week, got to slap my co-star, and it ended up playing in the Castro Theatre in San Francisco. From then on I have been on the website SF Casting for Commercials, Print, Film and TV. Among popular names, I just recently filmed Wives with Knives on Discovery ID, and Murder in the First on TNT.

There is something about the kinetic motion of acting that has a fulfillment for me modeling doesn’t necessarily not have, but feels like a total different animal.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

I am a constantly on the road towards spiritual nirvana. I lost my best friend 2 years ago in a school shooting at 24 years old, and actually saw my own life flash before my eyes, believe it or not. So, really, all I want is to be able to live life in the most poetic manner for you, Grace.

If I impress someone with my work, great. But all that matters at the end of the day is how you feel about yourself because no one will love you if you don’t love you. I do what I do because it feels good. I make way for any type of adventure and run far with it. When I have the chance to partake in something whether it be DJ’ing, modeling, acting, or dancing in the street, I put my absolute all into it. Then see where it goes. With that being said, I have no idea what my goals are. Haha! Actually, to live in another country for a year or more has been something that has been on my mind. Sorry, am I just ranting?

Rather than having the end result in mind, I’d rather have the journey and the process to be thoroughly excited about. I think many people forget that. In 5 to 10 years I could be on the streets, or in my own private jet. Who the hell knows.

Cynthia Aileen face closeupHow often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I don’t model as much anymore, but if an intriguing project comes along that sparks my quirky and edgy nature, I do it. I am pretty picky. I mostly do auditions and filming now. I audition for things a couple times a week and film maybe once every 2 weeks. As I said before, I DJ and have a full time job so I don’t know how I am still alive. What is sleep?

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

Best experience – Meeting James Franco. I was actually on break for a modeling gig and went to a quick dinner in Palo Alto and ended up sitting next to James Franco. So for some reason, I associate the two together. hehe.

Worst experience – Not running away with James Franco; I repeat, I left the restaurant without James Franco.

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

I was doing this intimate scene in a short film, not sexually intimate, just really mentally demanding, and… farted. It wasn’t the audible type of fart, but the smelly one. I had to watch the face of my co-star twinge a little. hahaha. I am lol’ing just writing it.

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

I want girls to give the address, name, and phone number of wherever they are going so if something goes horribly wrong, their boyfriend can fuck up that mother fucking twat.

The industry will never change their expectations of girls and “what is pretty” so I won’t even ask for that…it’s a vicious cycle unfortunately. I just hope girls have the confidence and right mental capacity to deal with it and feel good about themselves no matter what, or be able to tell them to fuck off.

Cynthia Aileen walking on the streetsDo you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

Hahaha! No one ever talks about those things to me because they know I don’t do either. I did band in high school and was raised a vegetarian. Which means no sports and a boring, yet nutritional diet. I make sure I eat healthy and make up for my lack of protein but that’s about it.

I take my dog to the dog park to make sure she gets some exercise and I live vicariously through her. I snack a lot and have an unyielding sweet tooth. My favorite food is vegetable chow mein with fried tofu. Yes.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

A nap can not be any less than 3 hours for me. I also suck at calculating percentages on the spot.

Would you change anything about yourself?

Negative. Love yourself ladies. Growing up the only thing I hated about myself was my skin color, which is on the pale side. In elementary school I was called Casper. haha. I used to sit in my backyard and try to get at least a wee bit of colour but I would only burn.

Now, I have come to embrace it. I feel extremely lucky I have no insecurities about my looks because that can be utterly poisonous. It’s a truly rewarding and freeing feeling. Please try it.

What is your favorite thing to do alone?

Need I explain? wink wink.

Watch youtube videos of Beyonce and mimic her every move, right? yeah, duh.

Interview with Elyse Nicole Craft — The Girl Next Door

Elyse Nicole Craft is a 20-year old model residing in Salinas, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

I am Elyse Nicole Craft, born and raised in California, USA. I am the oldest child of three. I have one brother, one sister, two cats, and my dad. All of whom I love to the ends of time. I am currently a waitress at multiple restaurants while saving up money to move to a big city and launch my professional modeling career. My passion is modeling, I absolutely love what I do and I hope to take it as far as I possibly can.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

When I was in my Senior year of high school, I had my senior pictures taken. Back then I was so shy and mousy – I turned out horrible in the pictures. But my dad saw them, and thought they were so beautiful. He told me I had to try and get into modeling. I told him I didn’t know how, I’m not pretty enough. My dad did his research and signed me up on Model Mayhem….and that’s were it all began. Photographers were contacting me left and right, even though my pictures were a nightmare compared to all of the other models on the website. However, they all told me the same thing – that they saw potential in me. I decided to give it a try, and with endless instructions and criticisms, my photos started to get better with each photoshoot. It turned out to be the best thing that I’ve ever done, because it gives me a way to express myself and give myself and my family something to be proud of.

Elyse Nicole Craft wearing a pink bikiniWhat are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

My dream come true would be to become a well known international model. If that doesn’t happen, I have been studying environmental engineering. I have always been a career based girl. For me, love will come when the time is right. So my family plans aren’t very thought out right now.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I do modeling whenever someone needs to hire me. My modeling work has been very consistent. I sometimes have three shoots a day! Because of my height I mainly do print work.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

I’ve had many great experiences in modeling. From being a Miss California beauty pageant state finalist to modeling ball gowns on live television on Wake Up San Diego. As for worst experiences, nothing comes to mind.

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

There is only one thing that I would like to change about the modeling industry – it’s the girls who are chosen to model for most clothing lines….they all look the same! Super skinny, pale, and too tall. We need girls who will represent the masses. Girls who will look the same as I would in the clothes they are modeling. That’s what I would love to see.

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

In high school I was very athletic. I played water polo, tennis, and was a swimmer. Now, I go to the gym every day to keep my body and muscle toned. My diet isn’t very strict; basically, I just eat a lot of protein and keep the carb intake low.

Elyse Nicole Craft wearing a black swimsuitPlease share something people don’t know about you.

I am obsessed with cats and clothing!

Would you change anything about yourself?

At times, when I see these gorgeous women in magazines and on television, I become really self conscious. Seeing them sometimes makes me wish that I look like them. Being bullied because of how I looked as a child doesn’t help, either. I am half Filipino so I have a wide nose and am shorter than most models. Those are the two things I get insecure about…but then I think about how the well-known people look -i.e. Beyoncé, Adele, and others- and they look nothing like the cookie cutter Barbie dolls. Yet almost everyone admires them. They are beautiful in their own unique ways. Thinking this way has made me see myself in a different light. I wouldn’t change a thing about myself. Life has molded me into a strong, independent woman and I am thankful for everything, both good and bad, that has happened to me.

What features do you look for in a partner?

In a partner I look for honesty, respect, equality, responsibility, and someone who loves to have fun and be themselves. My past romantic life has been too full of lies and deceiving. I’m ready for someone real and down to earth who can value their own goals while still being able to value a relationship with me.

Interview with Noelani — Medical doctor and model

Noelani is a 22-year old model residing in Pasadena, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

I was born in a small country town in northern California called Sutter. I grew up with my parents and three siblings and was a huge tomboy. I was extremely competitive in everything from school to music to sports, and was never satisfied with myself until I was the best. This drove me to begin competitive sports at a young age, where I succeeded in track and began competing at the state and national level. I was ranked as the number five pole vault and long jump athlete in the nation and had aspirations of joining the US Track team and competing in the Olympics.

However, every full ride offer and olympic dream was immediately destroyed after a severe snowboarding accident. I overshot a jump and fell about 30 ft, crushing my spine in 6 places and temporarily paralyzing myself from the waist down. After this, I had no choice but to focus on school and other aspirations instead. I moved to Los Angeles and studied Applied Health and Pre-optometry in college, and I will soon be attending Optometry school.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

During my sophomore year of college, I discovered Craigslist and all the wonderful cheap used things I could buy. I randomly came across an add for a Japanese model for 100 Women Magazine and thought “Why Not?” I had zero experience, but decided to just show up and see what happened. Unfortunately, I was not chosen for the magazine, but the photographer emphasized my modeling potential. He sent me test shots and told me to start building a portfolio. I did a few shoots here and there, but it wasn’t until I was chosen as a runway model for Japanese designer H.Naoto that I truly found my love for modeling. After this, I decided I wanted to make modeling a career.

Noelani wearing a hatWhat are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

Short term, I simply want to succeed as a model. I’m hoping to move out to Japan for a year or so, where I can really focus on my model career. In the long term though, I plan on finishing Optometry school and getting my medical license. I have an optometry business set up for me in Northern California, and plan on settling down and working up there.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I typically work 3 to 4 days a week, but the type of work may vary pretty significantly. I mainly do photo-shoots for clothing companies and independent photographers, so these primarily consist of catalog, lifestyle, and commercial modeling. I also occasionally do runway and high fashion, but this is almost solely limited to Japanese brands. My favorite type of modeling is usually print or runway work for Japanese lolita or visual kei styles.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

The worst experience I have had modeling was when I showed up to a fake casting. A model had posted a casting on model mayhem and I was accepted for an interview. I showed up and this “company manager” told me all about these amazing opportunities he had for me and all the successful things he had done. It sounded a bit too good to be true, and I was very skeptical of some of his claims, especially about working with certain celebrities. I immediately went home and checked all my sources and discovered he lied about everything and the company name didn’t seem to exist. I immediately called him out on his fraud and have not been associated with him or his fake company since.

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

The most embarrassing occurrence during a shoot was when I started my period mid photo shoot. We were on location and nowhere near a restroom and I was wearing a white skirt. Thankfully the photographer had a female assistant and we were able to quickly find a store and restroom, but the entire occurrence was mortifying!

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

I think the industry can be extremely harsh to particularly new and naive models. Models don’t seem to have many rights, and I have unfortunately seen many models be taken advantage of. One model that I worked with was very adamant that there was no nudity in her photos. During the shoot though, many of the shots ended up producing nip slips and such, but the photographer claimed he had the rights to the photos and could still use the images however he wanted. The model was absolutely distraught. I think that written agreements and releases from both the model and photographer should become more standard in order to ensure the safety of both.

Noelani wearing a swimsuit in a roomDo you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

Diet and exercise are very crucial parts of any model’s life. However, I do think that many people take these too far in extremes. I like to keep myself fit by playing basketball and going on runs occasionally. I used to go to the gym quite a bit, but I simply no longer have the time. As for food, I try to maintain a pretty healthy diet and typically eat a lot of Japanese food including fish and rice. I don’t restrict myself at all on what I can or cannot eat, but instead simply remind myself that moderation is key. Besides, I love ice cream and pizza way too much to ever give them up.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

Most people don’t know that I am a hardcore video game nerd. I am extremely involved in esports and play League of Legends almost every day.

Would you change anything about yourself?

I would love to change my height and make myself just a few inches taller!

What is the longest you have gone without taking a bath?

I used to go to Mexico and work on construction sites, and we were very limited in water availability. We were in dirt and working with cement all day and I usually would go an entire week without showering. There would literally be an entire layer of dirt caked onto all of us by the end of week.

Interview with Kyrstannie Day — Petite Model and Actress

Kyrstannie Day is a 20-year old model residing in Dublin, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

Originally raised in Sacramento, I am a 20 year old model and actress living in the San Francisco area in sunny California. I have 6 brothers and was raised without my mom, who was a drug addict. My mom was not a part of my life and I’m happy to say I never amounted to a statistic. I’m just the daughter of a drug addict, not a by-product.

Most of my time is spent networking or on set. And if I’m not there you’ll find me working at a motorcycle shop part time! When I do have free time, it’s spent with close family and friends or writing script for films I hope to direct at some point in the future.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

Modeling began for me right after graduating high school. I had a friend who was into photography down in LA and was up in northern California for a bit. So we met up, shot, and I was hooked from there! I saw a challenge that I wanted to take; being a model on the shorter side who wanted to make an impact in this industry. Eventually I branched out to acting and continue to grow and learn in both fields.

Kyrstannie Day face closeupWhat are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

Personally, I want to be able to impact as many lives as possible in a positive manner. As a high school student with acne and braces, I never felt as if I fit in or was considered “beautiful”. If I can show others that there is no definition of perfect, then I’ve accomplished something. If at least one person can wake up in the morning feeling better about themselves, more motivated, and content then I’ve done my job.
Professionally, I would love to expand in not just modeling but acting. My passion is in both, but there is something about character roles that I love! In five years, my goal is to be in a successful blockbuster film, or directed one!, and potentially on a comedic TV show that people enjoy watching.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I’m on set acting more now than I am modeling. Typically I shoot 3 days out of the week, sometimes the whole week I’m booked on a project. I’m currently in the middle of a TV pilot and a couple feature films as well as some voice over work.

As far as modeling goes, I book about a shoot a week and do more commercial looks, fashion, love doing glamour, and lifestyle.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

I remember showing up to a shoot one time and finding out I was modeling with the same car from 21 Jump Street. Not a similar looking one, the one. So that was a pretty cool experience and not what I was expecting at all!

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

One thing I would like to see change in this industry is something that is already being acknowledged and will hopefully lead to a more open and accepting world. And that would be the beauty campaigns showing women being themselves, not stressing about “being perfect”.

Kyrstannie Day wearing a black dressDo you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I currently take barre classes, which is a fusion of yoga, pilates, and ballet training, a couple times a week as well as work out on my own lifting weights and running. I’m at the gym 4 to 5 days a week.

As far as nutrition goes, I stay away from high sugar and sodium foods. I never want to promote not eating to stay thin or consuming under the recommended amount of daily calories. It’s all about moderation and eating as natural as possible. I’m big on chicken, rice, lentils, oats and grains, fruits, veggies. All the good stuff!

It’s important to keep in mind that what you put into your body is going to affect it one way or another. Treat your body right and it will do the same for you.

Would you change anything about yourself?

Nothing physical, it’s all about embracing who you are as long as you take care of yourself and are proud of it! Other than that, perhaps being able to be a little more forgiving and able to let go of things that don’t matter.

Are you currently in a relationship? How would you describe your partner?

My boyfriend is the absolute opposite of me! We have modeled together before and he is so shy and introverted. He’s a great guy but not too fond of going out and mingling with people like me.
