Interview with Kristie California

Kristie California is a 21-year old model residing in Sacramento, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

Hey I’m Kristie California! I’m a 21 year old alternative model, artist, designer, screen printer, mother and a housewife from Sacramento, California. I was born in Santa Cruz, California and then moved here with my mom and older sister when I was 5. I’m also a vegetarian as well as a competitive roller skater.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I began modeling in August of 2010. It was never something I planned on pursuing but the more I did it, the more I loved it and came up with fun ideas.

Kristie California wearing a red dressWhat are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

My main goal when it comes to modeling, is to get better with each photo shoot, to learn new ways to express myself, be creative and hopefully make a magazine cover within the next year. With art, I’d like to strengthen my skills with painting and portraits. I’ve been attending school as an art major since January of 2013. My goals for my clothing line, Eclectic Approach Clothing, consist of getting my brand out there, just promotion and events at this point. My most important goals pertain to my family and my daughter. In five to ten years, my husband and I will most likely be living near the beach back in my hometown.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I’m mainly a print model for clothing companies. I’ve never taken much interest in runway although I have had opportunities. I try and shoot once every week or so. When I started I was shooting 3 times a week, but I’ve decided to focus more on my family life. Shoots are either on location or studio so depending on that, as well as what’s provided -hair, makeup, and others- and who I’m shooting with, each one can be very different. For the most part I do my own makeup but I’m starting to work with more makeup artists and stylists and I love it!

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

The best experiences in modeling come from the fun you have and the friends you make, and that’s happened more often than not, but the worst experiences are when photographers get touchy and weird, … which is not funny.

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

I don’t believe anything super crazy has happened, the only thing that comes to mind is early on in my pregnancy I tried to shoot a lot before I got big so I could submit to magazines and keep my name out there, I would get winded and dizzy very easily, luckily I had understanding photographers!

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

Everyone wants to be a photographer now or thinks that they’re a model. It’s rough to work so hard for as long as I have and see magazines accept new models fresh out the gate when they’re basically just sending in selfies. The rejection is hard and the way people view some of my work can be taken the wrong way, but I think I’m just gonna keep doing what I’m doing.

Kristie California in the countryDo you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

Besides roller skating once in a while and wrestling with my little one I don’t do a lot for exercise. I eat what I want and as a vegetarian, it seems to be working out fine.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I’ve never been drunk! To some people that’s crazy.

Would you change anything about yourself (physical or otherwise) if you could?

I’d like to keep my over analyzing thoughts to a minimum.

Are you currently in a relationship? How would you describe your partner and sex-life?

I’m currently engaged to my daughter’s father. We will be getting married next spring. My fiance is amazing. He’s everything I could hope for. Besides him being my dream guy, he’s also a tattoo artist, so we’re able to bounce artistic ideas off each other which is great. The sex is good. That’s all you need to know haha.
