La Carmina, alternative model, Goth fashion blogger

Interview with La Carmina — Travel digital influencer, TV host

La Carmina is a 22-year old model residing in Los Angeles, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

I grew up in Vancouver, Canada but spent a lot of time in Asia with my family, and it led to my passion for alternative, Japanese and Gothic street styles. In 2007, I started my La Carmina blog to chronicle my obsessions for Jpop fashion and culture. The site caught on with readers, and it led to opportunities I never imagined including modeling for magazine covers, hosting travel TV shows around the world, and working as a digital influencer with travel and fashion partners. This year alone, I was in UK, Iceland, Singapore, Bali, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Vietnam – and it’s only the first half of 2015!

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I didn’t start out with any intention of being a model. When I started out, fashion blogging was new, and it was fun to share my personal style and stories with readers who shared my passions. My signatures are kawaii-Gothic makeup, colorful dyed hair, and alternative clothing. As my blogging career grew, it led to magazines featuring me in modeling spreads, as well as covers. To date, I’ve done editorial shoots for the covers of Vanity UK, Dark Beauty, Alt Noir, Giuseppina Magazine and more. I’ve also been featured in Cosmopolitan, Vogue, and various Asia fashion magazines like China’s Ray Li.

La Carmina outside of a chinese restaurantWhat are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

My life and career are constantly evolving, and it’s impossible to predict where I’ll be in even a year. Blogging as a full-time job didn’t even exist 5 to 10 years ago, and neither did social networks like Facebook and Instagram. Right now, I’m enjoying doing creative work with my friends that involves travel, and opening people’s eyes to alternative lifestyles and culture around the world. I’m especially focusing on travel TV and videos, and hope to keep growing all this in the next years.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

It depends on how you might define modeling. For example, in my upcoming journey to Europe and North Africa, I’ll be shooting almost every day with my film team. I’ll create a look of the day, and we’ll capture pro photos, videos and more all around the cities. This content will appear on my blog, in major media sites, and on my social networks. In terms of editorial modeling, with a team of makeup artists, hair stylists, and extensive photography equipment, I only do these types of shoots for magazine covers and spreads. Generally, I do a shoot like this once every two months.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

I recently shot a cover for Love Japan magazine, on location in Iceland. It was amazing to shoot on the black sand beaches, surrounded by the stark landscape and icy waters. I wore a Game of Thrones inspired outfit and had my hair in braids, since the HBO show is shot here.

As for negative experiences, I fainted on two shoots… once from a too-tight corset, and once from being in a hot tub for too long! But it was worth it, for the resulting shots.

La Carmina, alternative model, Goth fashion bloggerHave you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling
career?

I like to shoot on-location, since it fits my street style and travel aesthetic. This has led to some bizarre situations, such as doing a hardcore Gothic shoot in the busy streets of Hong Kong… We got a lot of funny looks from passersby!

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

Health, exercise and nutrition are extremely important to me. I travel so much and have to be at the top of my game especially during travel TV shoots, which can involve 12 hour long shoots. I eat clean as best as I can, without being too strict. I focus on free-range, organic, grassfed proteins, vegetables, fruits and healthy dairy. Sugar and carbs are kept to a minimum, with an emphasis on gluten-free options, but I love my ice cream!. As for exercise, I go on long walks, and do bodyweight exercises and high intensity interval training exercises. Efficient and effective, that’s how I roll.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I am obsessed with Miffy the bunny, and Italo Disco and Eurobeat music.

Would you change anything about yourself?

I try my best to keep in the moment, and not get worked up about the past or future, or get hung up on anxieties… Every day, I try to cultivate a bit more of this stability and wisdom. But it’s not always easy.

What is the one talent you wish you possessed?

It would be wonderful if I was fluent in many more languages… Traveling would be a breeze!

Interview with Ruthie — Mommy-Scholar turned Model

Ruthie is a 21-year old model residing in San Jose, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

I’ve always thought if I were to write an autobiography I’d title it ‘Entertainer.’ To me, it’s all about the story, about the adventure. I’m living mine. I was born in Legos Nigeria but my family relocated to London England a short 3 months later due to unsafe living conditions. Six years and two more siblings later we were in London, Ontario, Canada where the bulk of my life so far has been spent. I’ve been an artistic person for as long as I can remember forcing my brother and sister to act in my plays till I told my parents I wanted to audition for a school for performing arts at the age of nine. After getting in, I learned how to dance, sing, act, draw and play the recorder, piano and cello. I also discovered high jump which I competed in up to the varsity level. Pushed by my parents to find a “real career” and unsure of how to focus my energy, I found myself a freshman with an undeclared major.

That is, until I discovered psychology which fascinated me like no other academic topic ever had. Having a son a week before my 19th birthday was not part of the original plan, but instead of using it as an excuse I’ve used it to motivate me that much more to focus and better our lives. I continued in school throughout the pregnancy, I carried it well, only my room-mate noticed!, spent the final trimester in Europe with my extended family and returned to class when he was a month old. Now I’ve done that degree and am discovering myself as a model in California while I pursue where my heart really lies: in screen writing and production.

Ruthie wearing a blue topWhen, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I first started modeling when I was thirteen. I was actually at an acting convention in Toronto and as I was walking to the ballroom it was being held in, I passed by another ballroom where a modeling scouting convention was being held. A woman standing by the door assumed that I was lost and tried to direct me into her room, I guess I have my height to thank for that!. Upon insisting that she was the one mistaken she enrolled me in the talent search, paid my fee and kept me up all night teaching me how to walk. I owe this lady my walk and start of my modeling career and yet do not remember who she is or her name!

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

My number one goal is to live in a way that my now two-year old can be proud of. I keep integrity and professionalism very dear to me. I hope to offer him experiences and education that will open his mind and show him a world that you can work to achieve any goal you set your mind to. Professionally I hope to explore and see where modeling will take me. I plan on returning to school to get a film degree and eventually write an produce films; I was’t kidding about the autobiography, I’ve seen a lot of things!.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

Right now, being a mom limits how much I put myself into. Also I have only been living here in California for a couple months. I tend to shoot about 1 to 2 times a week and it’s usually something outdoors incorporating my tall build or physical ability. Studio shoots tend to be product or fashion. I am yet to do runway here but that will change soon I’m sure!

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

My best experience was actually my first shoot in California. It was for a shoe company and I was really nervous and not sure what to expect. I was modelling with 4 other models and everyone from the HMUA to the creative director was so friendly and loved that I was Canadian. My favorite part was when the Owner of the shoe line cracked open a bottle of wine and the creativity really started flowing. I got to model with a sexy red corvette and we got some killer shots from that shoot!

Ruthie interacting with a treeHave you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

This could also double as my worst experience I’ve had so far…where to even begin. I was told that I was interviewing to be a spokesmodel for a fashion jewellery line. After an initial interview in my city I was told that I was going to have another interview in LA with someone higher up in the company and was offered a ride. The beat up van that was provided for me had an ant infestation and the other models spoke loudly in Chinese from the onset of our journey till the 8 hour drive, including a popped tire, was complete. When we arrived at the interview, I quickly realised that I was the only non-Chinese speaking person and when I asked a model to translate I found out that I was actually at an audition for a beauty pageant being held for a jewellery company! The entire day’s events were conducted in Chinese and no one was assigned to make sure I got any important information. After a long day, 6 hours longer than I was told, I was one of the 2 out of 16 who made it to the semi finals… needless to say, I turned down the opportunity.

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

Hmmm, good question. There are several things about the industry that aren’t “ideal” like unrealistic standards or a skewed perspective of reality but I see that more as a problem with society and not something that the modeling industry creates but rather reflects. I make every modeling interaction as professional as possible, things that most other industries demand. Things like prompt and precise communication, doing things in a timely manner, showing up on time, clearly laying out expectation and following through. I think as a business, a surprising lack of that is tolerated.

Ruthie face closeupDo you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

As mentioned before, I was involved in athletics for the majority of my life thus far. Track and field runs in my blood and I was pretty good at it. The arrival of my son put a halt to that and while other mothers have bounced back, becoming a mother rearranged my priorities. During my pregnancy, all thoughts of health went out the window and I found myself 60 pounds heavier right before delivery. I had to lose about 30 pounds of that on my own. That is when my personal fitness journey started. Gone were the days that I could eat whatever I wanted and I had to learn dietary discipline for the first time in my life. Now fitness is super important to me and it pains me to skip a day at the gym. Nutrition is a little harder but I have found realistic way to make it a part of my lifestyle without feeling deprived. I am somewhat of a mad scientist in the kitchen; let there be flavour!

Please share something people don’t know about you.

Something people may not guess about me is that I am a Christian. It is something that I grew up with but after I became a mother it became something very personal to me, not as a religion but as a relationship in my life. That faith has definitely given me the strength to overcome some obstacles and take chances I would have been too scared to before.

Would you change anything about yourself?

Of course like most girls I do not love 100% of my appearances but I focus on loving myself which includes my flaws. You can’t have originality and perfection at the same time. Otherwise, I would love to be able to nail this motherhood thing someday. Never have I appreciated my mother so much, this stuff is hard! I would love the ability to make him sleep whenever I wanted. ha!

What was the meanest rumor ever spread about you?

Once in my freshman year of high school, someone started a Gossip Girl Facebook account for our school and stated that they would be posting people’s secrets. Somehow, for reasons unknown to me, word spread that I was the anonymous creator of the account and someone even hacked onto it and changed the name to my own! You would think that would make my innocence obvious… I ate lunch alone in the girl’s change room for a couple months. That’s probably the most alone I have felt in my life.

Interview with Alyssa-Marie Papaleo

Alyssa-Marie Papaleo is a 24-year old model residing in Fresno, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

I am Alyssa-Marie Papaleo, I am a Model and Photographer. I am from Fresno, California. Born from an Italian father and a Canadian mother. I enjoy both Photography, and modeling as well as taking care of my father and his Cat Rescue Foster House. I like to dance, or go traveling in my spare time, which is hardly ever.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

In 2010, I first got started by filling in for a model that flaked, and I was supposed to be the second photographer. They all agreed that they like what I was wearing, and that the light was too nice to let go to waste. By the end of the shoot the were impressed with my ability to pose as well as know where my light was, but mainly take direction very well. But I had take fashion design in high school, but moved and had to discontinue that. Howeveer, I’ve had a camera in and at all times documenting everything. In college I chose Photography as my AS Major.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

After losing most of my photo and memories due to moving and couch surfing, photography helps me recover new memories. After I graduate with my AS degree in May 2015, I would love to attend FIMD for Fashion, or The Arts Institute to further my education in photography. But I want to continue pursuing my model career. I think by 5 to 10 years, I will not being living at home, and I will be taking care of myself, working doing photography and modeling and school if I can afford it. And I will do modeling until I can’t anymore.

Alyssa-Marie Papaleo topless wearing folk accessoriesHow often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I started off with Trade shoot and group shoots, mainly for networking, learning from other photographers and models as well as some basic experience. Then I noticed many photographers wanted to work with me, as well as other models, and that they were referring me for jobs and gigs. I shot as an extra for a movie filmed locally named Showboys, released in 2013, and two short films in 2013 apart of local film festival.

As of recently I can only take paid shoots, because my schedule is limited; Last year of College, Two part-time jobs, Disabled father; Cat fostering, as well as all the normal daily stuff like eat, sleep, clean and study and shoot,  so I plan everything!

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

Most of my events, interviews and films have been a great experience.

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

Height! Not just for me but for lots of people. I don’t think there should be a standard. Models come in all shapes and sizes. Because there are plenty of women who look the part to be a model but can’t. I am constantly booked as a surprise, they say wow you photographer tall, and we always come to the conclusion that I am proportioned, even at a shorter height I have learned to model for my body shape. And there are plenty of unique women that can model.

Alyssa-Marie Papaleo in front of a lakeDo you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I am a very active person even though now I don’t do much of sports. I used to be in Softball in elementary, and I was on the Swim, water-polo, and dive team part of high school. But my mother said I would get bored in the house and climb on things and practically be working out all the time as a child. Now I am a very fast paced person, I make a list of everything I need to do for the day and try to do as much of it as I can as soon as I can, because I never get it all done. Eating healthy is a big thing for me because I am a very sick person after year of bad eating. Being skinny can bother me when others point it out, because I can’t do very much more to gain weight than I am already doing. I am doing my best to get the healthy food I need with what little money I can save.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I can suck my stomach in – organs actually shift into the upper abdominal cavity. I can also create a t-shape and make it “wave”. I can also plug my nose while swimming with my top lip, after have ripped it in pre-school.

Would you change anything about yourself?

Not really because if I had was just able to provide for myself my body and mind would be back to normal and not falling in and out of balance. Normal eating and a regular exercise, and regular income would help me change what I need to change.

Interview with Helen Of Joy

Helen Of Joy is a 24-year old model residing in Los Angeles, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

I was born in Bath, England and raised in the beautiful Okanagan area of British Columbia, Canada. My family is very diverse, on my father’s side alone, I have cuban, Jamaican, Swedish, Welsh, Panamanian, Indian and Chinese roots! I also found out via a long lost family member we are also related to a native tribe called the Arawak, which is Spanish and African descent. I grew up dancing, modeling and acting thanks to my supportive parents who did the same for my siblings who also act. I also became a major part of the Canadian urban scene, which entailed me surrounding myself with musicians, artists. I began promoting for hip hop and edm shows which has lead to me being a part of battle rap culture.

View More: http://bypetronella.pass.us/mexicanstyledbridalshootWhen, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I began modeling at a young age, my mum used to be a model as well. I began runway in my teens and in my 20s my work always gravitated back to the arts when I moved to Vancouver and then to Toronto to follow my passions and career.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

I want to accomplish many things. I want to become a part of a successful tv series and land a few movie roles; Bond girl is something I’ve always wanted. I see myself accomplishing goals with charity work to do with children and animal rights! I hope to gain the covers of rolling stone, vogue and GQ magazine to name a few. Design my own fashion line, run my own talent agency and travel the world spreading good vibes and a good message! I also wish to own a house and have kids perhaps in that time also!

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I do a bit of everything full time. I want to pursue my acting career more so but shoots definitely help with that industry also! I have a few runway shows coming up in the future as well as collaborations for clothing lines.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

My best is all the amazing relationships and connections I have made with people I have worked with! It was the best advice I received was to foster your relationships. It’s key in this industry.

My worst is creepy photographers. I’m an incredibly awkward person sometimes but my creep radar is on point. Making sexual or inappropriate advances is not cool!

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

I slipped and fell backstage once, thank God it was backstage! Good advice is to tape the bottom of your shoes so you don’t hit the ground.

Helen Of Joy wearing a long gownIs there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

I honestly feel it’s on a good path and will continue to. I’ve been very fortunate that people aren’t afraid of beautiful tattoos anymore and that people prefer mixed race models for the diversity now!

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I practice dance, Pilates and crossfit! I would love to take up boxing as well! I always try and eat healthy and I’ve begun to cut out dairy and red meats!

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I’m a pretty open book about what I feel passionate about! I was considering lately running for president one day. I mean, if Obama can come from nothing and do some amazing things, why can’t I?

Would you change anything about yourself (physical or otherwise) if you could?

Nothing. I’m very happy! Longer hair perhaps!

Are you currently in a relationship? How would you describe your partner?

I am head over heels for my man Nicholas Hyams, who is known to the hip hop world as Lush One; he is a power house of the battle rap industry and he is doing some amazing, next level things for the culture. Can’t wait for him to shine brighter than he ever has before, I’m super proud of him!
