Interview with Jessie Murray — Full Time Mom, College Student and model

Jessie Murray is a 25-year old model residing in Branson, Missouri.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Jessie, and I have been modeling since I was 6 months old thanks to my parents Edwin and Patricia, who helped me to start my career. I was born in Arkansas but have lived in Missouri all of my life, and my main hobbies are singing, dancing, acting, modeling, do some photography, play the guitar and so much more. I am interested in the arts as well, and I am currently in College majoring in automatics and studying to be a wildlife conservation officer. I do all that I can for my child and I plan on becoming successful.

Jessie Murray nude covered with a blanketWhen, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

My parents are my biggest supporters, because when I was six months old -during early 1991, the following year after I was born-, they got me started off in modeling at a very young age, taking me to photography and artists studios, where they used my images in their arts.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

My personal goal is to finish College so I can have a fantastic career to be sure that I can take care of my little family. If I make it in the modeling industry that would be extremely amazing, as I have been involved in it for so long and hope that I can do well with it at some point.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I model a few times a month, although I used to model at least 3 or 4 times a week before I got my full time job and started College. I mainly do photo shoots, actings, pose for artists, as well as the catwalk; in general, I have done all genres except in the adult industry, which I don’t plan to either. Figure nude is OK for me, but if it looks unclassy I will certainly not do it.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

My best experiences are meeting new people, as it is great talking to them, seeing their amazing work, appreciating that everyone is different, and I am happy to work with them all. Worst experience is meeting some photographers who do not give you any images after a shoot, and I have even met a few that did not give me any images at all.

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

On one photo shoot I almost fell off a little cliff into some mud.

Jessie Murray modeling a red dressIs there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

I wish people wasn’t so judgmental on race, hair and body shape, and I’d love to have them to be more understanding of models that are parents, as no matter what our children come first. In the same way, I cannot stand them picking favorites and not giving others a chance.

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I like to hike, play basketball, go out dancing and just working out in general, since I am a pretty active person. I eat just about everything, I am on no diet.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I have a scoliosis problem.

Would you change anything about yourself?

I would not change anything about myself. I am who I am, why change?.

If you had only 24 hours left to live, what would you do?

I would spend that time with my family, do things that my daughter wants to do, make as many happy memories with her that I possibly could and show her more of how much her mommy loves her. Her happiness is way more important to me, so no matter what I would spend it with her.

Interview with Deven — SAG-AFTRA Actress, Rock Singer, Model

Deven is a 28-year old model residing in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

Greetings, and it’s a pleasure to have you take an interest in my work as well as this blog. I am Michigan-made and proud, having lived on both sides of the state. I have a Bachelors Degree in Theatre and took my passion overseas where I studied Drama in London, and growing up on the stage put a curse on the world for me, it’s the only place I really feel like I am home, although it definitely helped with my wonderful relationship with the camera and how I express myself.

When I moved to Detroit, I became a full-time artist; shooting films and commercials, modeling for local clothing companies and magazines, as well as developing two very amazing rock bands. I also grew up in a family of musicians, so music and singing are also huge parts of my life; and aside from the arts, I have many hobbies, including fitness training, pole dancing, yoga, dance, cooking, astronomy, and traveling… not forgetting my family and adorable cats.

Deven under blue lightWhen, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I started modeling in my late teens but never felt comfortable branching out until I started acting professionally. I never saw myself as a model, just a young girl who liked dressing up and taking photos. When I started getting exposure from film, I knew I had to set my standards higher for myself which meant branch out in different areas of art, which included modeling. Head shots were crucial so on top of a headshot session, I would have a modeling session. Then I got involved with doing live runway shows and print work in Detroit which was an incredible experience.

My inner tigress came out during the live shows, I felt like I was thriving; in my recent shoots, I have been known to be aggressive, raw, and let’s say… unconventional, depending on what type of shoot, of course. I prefer going places models usually don’t go, because I have the advantage of extensive acting experience on camera and on stage, and as such my passion drives my body wherever it happens to go in the shoot. Now, I am taking my career to a whole different, higher level of commitment, and finally believe I can make my mark as an artist. Modeling is a huge part of helping me love and respect myself, and to help aspire to be the best I can be.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

Professional goals are simple: win an Oscar, win a Grammy, and create art with incredible people around the world, which will be a lot of work, but I am one to reach instead of wonder. I hope to one day be able to travel all over the world and connect with people from all walks of life, maybe even raise a family and live in a different place… I can see myself touring in a few years, filming overseas and taking my cats wherever I go. Most importantly, I want to see myself happier and healthier than ever.

Wherever I will be, I hope it is surrounded by good food, good company, and good beer. I love craft beer, always loved the idea of running a theatre or brewery down the road and I can get away with running the show. So, nothing too big.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I am a working actress, which is my primary career, and I do a lot of print shoots that are more Gothic or alternative fashion; then I got into doing more Erotic, Fetish, and BDSM shows and walk the catwalk, flog the models, and others. Lingerie and Chains soon became some favorite things to wear. I took a break from modeling as I went through a transition in my life and am now back and ready to rock, and I have a promo video in production which should be ready by Spring. I was also just recently published with over 20 prints, and have more in the mix, and I am always in search of more gigs and hope to make modeling another career.

Deven toplessPlease tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

I haven’t really had a bad experience, I learned from other models to research who you are working with and always be in communication with the photographer. So, I’ve never been in a bind, however, the most interesting shoot I did was in town, and I never met the guy personally. I loved his style, and we wanted to meet up and talk, where he told me to just bring a bunch of different clothes and we would wing it. When I got to his studio, I took a look at his artwork and immediately knew the clothes I brought would be useless. So, thankfully I had pasties, I put on a Mexican wrestling mask, and we ended up shooting for almost 8 hours!

It was an awkward beginning but as we worked, we developed a great friendship; it was intense and emotional, and crazy and wild. He is still a dear friend of mine. My best experience so far has been recent, as I just had my first publication of being a Cover Model for a magazine, as well as having over 10 solo shots and 10 shots with a lovely young woman. It was an honor to have been selected, and I can’t wait to get published again. Fingers crossed!

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

Probably, however I have no shame and prefer the strange, so what may seem normal to me, may be strange for others. I guess not every gig will ask a model to flog the other models at the end of a fashion show, and dance in nothing but leather straps; before the show, I was lucky enough to have a fellow model tell me I had toilet paper stuck on the bottom of my boot, so she saved me from some embarrassment.

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

Yes. However, I think the industry is evolving in a positive direction, at least how the world views models. The expectations are more realistic and healthy, models are different sizes and shapes, which are more relatable to the public eye. Designers are growing bold, and there are many more models and designers coming into their own thanks for social media. I am looking forward to seeing where the industry goes.

Deven fully naked with tapeDo you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I am a gym monkey, I am in at least 5 days a week, rotating cardio, swimming, and weightlifting. I also pole dance and study yoga. Diet and nutrition are very important to maintain the type of physique I identify with, although most of my young adult life, I was a horrible eater and always forgot to eat or starve myself a week before a shoot. The weight would come off but come back on just as fast. That would cycle into lowering self-confidence, and fearing the gym.

Plus, I am a musician and we had a lot of shows, and a lot of drinking to do. I’d see myself in pictures as skinny, and not in a good way, so I decided instead of getting frustrated with myself, I took action to develop healthy habits instead of grandiose goals. Goals sounds sexier, but habits are consistent, as with eating healthy, I have energy and optimism to work out, which helps my overall mentality and perception on life. Go eat some colorful food, drink a lot of water, get some good sleep, and smile.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I am hyper-extended in my arms and legs, which makes horror shoots extra fun, which means I can spin my arms around in different ways and gross out the manliest of men.

Would you change anything about yourself?

I have always had an insecurity towards my nose, and tried to distract from it by having bangs for 8 years. Since I grew my bangs out, I have had more compliments on my nose and face than ever before. I found my nose irritating because it would cast a shadow in photos, and utter nonsense that I eventually realized there was no point in criticizing. I took to heart what friends said: to just embrace myself, nose and all.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Beer and cheese, or beer cheese, or pasta with cheese… I have an unhealthy obsession with it. Life is too short not to indulge every once in a while. In fact, it’s healthy to treat yourself in moderation. If I gave up cheese forever, I would die, or just be very sad.

Interview with Kyla — Top-Ranked Junior Athlete turned Model

Kyla is a 17-year old model residing in Sarasota, Florida.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Kyla. I am currently 17 years of age. I was born in New Jersey, but moved to Florida at the age of 10 to pursue my passion for tennis. After a few years of training, I was able to compete internationally in junior tournaments around the world. Some of my hobbies include dance, yoga, and, of course, modeling.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I found my interest for modeling at age 13, after repeatedly being told that I should try it out. At 14, I was asked to model for various small companies and decided to put together a decent portfolio with the help of some wonderful photographers. Within a few months, I was able to find an agency.

Kyla dressed as a tennis playerWhat are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

I have decided to attend a University next year, to pursue my Masters of Business Administration. In ten years, I see myself, hopefully, being successful in my endeavors and holding a steady job in Finance.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I have taken it easy this year, in regards to modeling. It is my last year in High School and I did not make modeling a priority in my busy schedule. Although, I still model during my spare time and work as a background actress in the film industry.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

The best experiences I have had in modeling would probably be the glamorous side. It is truly an experience, being able to go to exotic locations, fancy hotels, and having a hair and makeup team by your side. Also, when random people come over to compliment you, before asking to take a picture with you, it makes you feel like some sort of celebrity. It makes you feel valued and special. The worst experiences would have to be the competitive castings. I never expected the castings to be like they actually are. It is brutal. You stand in lines, next to hundreds of gorgeous women, as casting directors poke at your face and body pointing out all of your pros and cons. They treat you like some sort of emotionless doll that is replaceable and invaluable. If you have not figured it out, it is not a great feeling.

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

There was only one partially embarrassing thing to happen to me during my modeling career. I was wearing this really nice gown and stilettos and had to walk through this jungle-like terrain. After I almost ate it three times, they told me to stop where I was. They had to send a man to hold on to me and steady me as I walked to my position. I am pretty sure I accidentally ripped the dress too. Opps, I am sorry.

Kyla face closeupIs there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

Yes, I would definitely change the industry’s retouching and photoshopping obsession. Editors will pinch and tweak photos until they have reached some unrealistic standard of perfection. Young girls are wearing tons of makeup, getting plastic surgery, dieting, and striving for this unattainable idea of perfection that the industry has implanted into their minds. The truth is that this perfection does not and will never exist. Why try to edit these already beautiful girls into this alien image that society has been trained to obsess over?

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I used to obsess over my strict diet and exercise regimen to the point where it became very unhealthy. As of now, I follow a vegetarian or vegan diet which is much more relaxed. I no longer have to count calories or carbs. I eat 5 to 6 meals a day which consist of legumes, grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables. I play tennis 5 to 6 days a week and go to the gym around 3 times a week. I also dance and enjoy yoga and barre classes. I feel that a balanced nutrition and an exercise regimen is essential for a healthy and happy life.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

People are often confused about my ethnicity. Most people think I am either a mix of Hispanic-American or Asian-American. My whole family, including my sister, was born in the Philippines, except for me. I am the first generation to be born in America.

Would you change anything about yourself?

Everyone has their insecurities or things that they would love to change about themselves. I know I have many insecurities. However, in the end, I would not change anything about myself. I have learned to love who I am and accept that perfection does not exist. My flaws are what make me special and unique. My features are a product from the loving parents who have raised me to become the young woman I am today. Every single human is special and beautiful in their own ways. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise.

What features do you look for in a partner?

I get this question quite often. Haha. Well this is more of a quality, rather than a feature, but, one word: Respect. Respect is very important to me in all areas of my life.
