Interview with Corinne

Corinne is a 22-year old model residing in New York, New York.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

I was born and raised in a very small town in the middle of New York State. I have always loved the idea of modeling, acting and preforming, and with the support of my mom, I began modeling at 14 years old. It has been my “side hustle” for almost a decade, I can’t imagine what my life would be like if I didn’t do it.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

When I was in kindergarten, my teacher wanted to cast me as an elf – one of the lead roles – in the school’s Christmas play, but I turned down her offer, even though she insisted. I lied and told her I was too shy to sing in front of the school, but really I just didn’t want to wear the funny ears. When it came time for the play, I watched the elves sing and perform and make everyone smile. I was so jealous! I regretted not taking the role, then my mom asks me why I wasn’t an elf and I told her what happened. She explained to me that I need to take every opportunity that is given to me, and to never shut any doors. I know it’s a silly story, but ever since I’ve given my all at every opportunity that comes my way. As time went on and I became more experienced, I get to be more selective, but in the beginning I did it all, and I think my good attitude played a big role in my success.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

Modeling and performing has given some so much true confidence and social skills. I am able to make connections and communicate with people in such an honest and meaningful way, that I want to continue to help communicate messages, whether it’s in front of or behind the camera. There are stories to be told, I love finding ways to tell them, and as I get older, I see myself doing more television segments and leaving my photo and print work behind me, but as I said before, I’m not one to turn down opportunities – so it’s all up in the air.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

During my freshman year of college, I had a full class schedule, worked at a clothing store and modeled. This is where promo events saved me! My class schedule conflicted majorly with photo and video work, but I could go and work the launch parties and late night fashion events. I’d work until 3 or 4 in the morning and wake up the next day for a 9:00 am class! Now that I am working full time in the cosmetics industry, my modeling has become more of a hobby than my main source of income and I like it like this! I like collaborating with friends and new photographers to create something, and since I’m only shooting a few times a month, I am able to give 150% to these jobs and I’m not as burnt out!

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

My best experience is working the Today show with Lilliana Vazquez and her assistant and stylist, Lauren Dougherty. These shoots were high energy! Live television goes fast, so you need to be on your toes. These women are so great to work with because they have fun with each other and laugh together but are still so professional and take their jobs very seriously. I’ve had some crummy experiences where the photographer and I just aren’t flowing, or the makeup artist makes me look crazy… but I just count these as lessons and move on.. no use harping on a bad experience.

corinne-cleavageHave you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

I tell people the time I got hit by a taxi while I was dressed as a cheetah in a body suit and body paint for a jungle themed runway. Hair and makeup was across the street for the venue… mine took such a long time because they were painting on every spot. So I’m late… I run out of the building and am darting through cars and a taxi just does not care and nudges me… not to hurt me just to prove a point: I know I shouldn’t of been running in traffic. I made it to the runway on time… missing a few spots that rubbed off on the taxi… but on time!

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

I would like to see a better respect for the models. For example, if I go to a print shop, I need to have a release to print a photo of my face, this protects the photographers’ rights and I understand that… but the photographer can go to the same print shop and print the same photo of my face and no one asks for a release from them. There aren’t many practices in place to protect the models’ rights, and this leads to models being disrespected and taken advantage of.

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I’m a cardio junkie. There’s this fear when you’re a short model -I’m 5’5″- that if get too toned and muscular you get defined as a fitness model and won’t get as many fashion and art jobs, so I never got into that kind of training. I do yoga, but that’s mainly for my mental well being. I have also been taking Pilates classes which I feel like keep everything toned and tight without bulk. As for my diet, I believe in balance, so I eat as organically and unprocessed as possible, but I’m not perfect. Food effects more than your weight, it also affects your attitude and energy; not eating or going on a strict diet might make you skinny, but if you’re tired and grumpy and your skin looks sallow no one will want to work with you, no matter how skinny you are. My body fluctuates very easily, so the day of a shoot that will be body focused I alter my diet to make sure I look my best.

corinne-black-and-white-photoPlease share something people don’t know about you.

I really am an open book, I guess maybe that’s what people don’t know, that if they ever want to know something they can just ask!

Would you change anything about yourself?

Physically I would love to be taller! There’s more work out there for tall models, and sample clothing fits better. All in all, I’m pretty happy with myself and the decisions I’ve made to get to where I’m at now.

Have you ever stolen anything?

I was working a promotion for a new vodka brand with a group of models I’ve never worked with before. As the team was packing up, the other models began snatching the vodka used for display! Bottles and bottles of vodka right in their purse. I was too young to drink at the time, but I wanted to take something too… so I took a shot glass. I know I know… I’m such a rebel.

Interview with Ilvy Kokomo — Full time model from small Latvia

Ilvy Kokomo is a 24-year old model residing in Riga, Latvia.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

I am a full time model, from a very small and cold country in Eastern Europe named Latvia. My hobbies include sports, swimming, traveling, photography and of course my main hobby as well as my profession is modeling. I have just received my University degree in Physiotherapy, which has given me a vast amount of knowledge, and I am very grateful for it.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

It all started when I was 17 years old and I knew I wanted to try nude modeling as soon as I turned 18, and then I started working with a modeling agency in Latvia. After some time, I started doing freelance work mostly, and at the same time I was attending University, which proved to be difficult, but somehow I managed to do it and now I’m modeling full time and enjoying my every single travel.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

My personal goal is to take from the world as much as it gives and my professional goal is to get well known in this industry. In five to ten years I see myself as a well known model from a small country; I also want to develop my own photography skills, and although I am still just a beginner, I really enjoy being on both sides of camera.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I do modeling full time. I mostly travel around Europe and sometimes I come to the United States as well. My modeling work mostly consists of glamour photoshoots and I am doing commercial works as well. My craziest commercial experience was a photoshoot and acting for bungee jumping Latvia, where I had to do several bungee jumps and it was awesome.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

As I am a very positive person, I will talk only about my best experiences. As I mentioned before, I really enjoyed making commercials from bungee jumping Latvia, but I also enjoyed photoshoots in wild Norwegian nature for personal art projects, and really enjoyed working with Unique Photography Events in France, shooting in amazing designer dresses in an old French chateau. And I am very excited to participate in a photography event in Puerto Rico organized by Caribbean Dream Photo Shoots.

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

Of course. It was funny once to do body paint when I was completely golden-painted. I also enjoyed a crazy underwater shoot, although it was very difficult to hold my breath with empty lungs and then pose. It was a crazy experience to pose in Norway in the snow, very cold, it gave me a feeling like thousands of needles were sticking into my skin. But the pictures came out gorgeous, so it was absolutely worth it. I could write a book about my crazy modeling experiences!

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

Yes, definitely. I would like to change a stereotype among the people that models are dumb. It is absolutely not true, as models are usually very intelligent. I have met so many different models and it is very rare that they are dumb, because it’s just not possible in this industry: models need to use their brains, it is also a very strategical work to develop ourselves and show us from the best point of view.

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

Sport in my life is very important, so I do sports daily. When I can, I go to the gym and do some different dancing classes. When I’m traveling, and with a limited time for exercise, I do running and yoga. On the other hand, I don’t have a particular diet: I eat almost everything I want, I just try not to exaggerate with the amounts, and always try to hold to a principle: as soon as you feel the hunger is gone, stop eating. In addition, I am a vegetarian, and love sweets; all sorts of chocolates, candies and cookies. If I eat more than I should, I just add some workout time to the next day routine.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I am a very ordinary and simple person. And I believe in faith, karma and energy transmission to other people.

Would you change anything about yourself?

I am very happy the way I am and I think everyone should love him or herself. It is immediately visible in a person if they are happy with themselves, it transmits totally different energy than from the person that is with a low self-esteem and not happy with themselves.

What is the one talent you wish you possessed?

I wish I would be a ballerina. I’m a huge fan of ballet and I really love ballerina photoshoots; it looks very elegant and fragile, at the same time very strong and powerful. As I always try to achieve what I want, I wanted to look like a real ballerina in a photoshoot, so I took ballet classes to learn how to pose as a ballerina, just some basic poses, and you can see the result in my portfolio; I think I achieved what I wanted and I was very happy with the result. Thanks to my ballet teacher and all the photographers who agreed to capture my crazy ideas.

Interview with Ashley E. Matthews — Song and dance model

Ashley E. Matthews is a 26-year old model residing in Las Vegas, Nevada.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

Canadian born, southern California raised, current Las Vegas local in Rock of Ages the music. Professional musical theatre actress, singer, dancer as well as specialty performer and model. Hapa -half asian- and proud of it, I have worked professionally on both coats, Vegas, Utah and even all the way to Macau.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I started out as dancer, then became a musical theatre actress and film and tv actress. The dance life lead to a lot of modeling opportunities both print and live and I kind of fell into it. They all tend to go hand in hand and I love each one for what they are.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

My professional goal is to continue performing, acting, and modeling for as long as I can and never have a “grown up” job. I don’t like to set time limits, every actress wants to be on Broadway or win a Tony or Oscar, but unlike most professions, that doesn’t make or break a career. Not being on Broadway doesn’t mean an unsuccessful career, so as long as I’m happy in five to ten years, I’m doing something right.

Ashley E. Matthews dressed like a mermaidHow often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

My main career is acting, live stage, on camera, among others, so the modeling jobs are here and there. I typically do fashion, dance photography, and live modeling and performance type jobs and have done some glamour and catwalk in the past. I have done a lot of bridal modeling as well.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

In modeling, the best experience I had was at a job for a launch of a new Liquour line. the Job consisted of us taking photos on the red carpet, passing out samples to celebrities, and sitting in the pool and hot tub at a private mansion while holding cocktails made of the new liquor. We even played around in the photo booth set up for guests and the photos ended up so good they were used for advertisement for the product. We had a blast and I still can’t believe that was a paid job. The worst experience I had was being told I would be modeling at a Bridal expo on a stationary platform. When I arrived I was put into a massive bridal gown two sizes too big for me with a cathedral train, too big shoes, and told to walk a catwalk in front of hundreds of future brides. Nervewracking and not my best work.

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

When it comes to the entertainment industry in general- we are in need of a major boost of diversity. The default tends to be caucasian- though high fashion modeling tends to be more diverse. Commercial modeling and especially Hollywood and Theatre have serious faults when it comes to diversity, especially when it comes to Asians. Asians are not given the same opportunity as caucasians and even other minorities and it’s 2016- time for change. Thank God for shows like Hamilton on Broadway breaking barriers- but it’s not enough.

Ashley E. Matthews wearing black underwearDo you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I am the last person to talk to about this. Though I am a professional dancer, I am not a professional fitness or nutrition expert. My exercise is dance, right now the show that I am in. If I work out before a show -6 shows a week- I don’t have the energy to get through my show- so the high energy choreography serves as my cardio and exercise in my everyday life. When it comes to nutrition, I’m a carboholic, and though I tend to try and think about eating healthy… it’s not my strongest suit. I’m a super foodie and I say enjoy life and the importance of food while you can. Life is too short for green salads and bland meals.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I am a trained fire eater.

Would you change anything about yourself?

I wish I could work on self confidence internally. Though I may seem confident, internally, this business is hard and I have my daily struggles.

Do you have any fears or phobias?

Octopus scare me like no other. They are a terrifying animal, far too intelligent, can fit through any size hole bigger than their beak, open jars from the inside to escape, and change color and texture in the blink of an eye. They are terrifyingly smart and dangerous- and people are brave enough to eat them, I don’t know how.

Interview with Eira Rose — Amorphous, Pocket-sized Model

Eira Rose is a 25-year old model residing in Purvis, Mississippi.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Eira Rose, born in Tampa, Florida, to a military family, and have lived all over the world. I’m a fashion designer and cosplayer; I dabble in writing, music, makeup, jewelry-making, and wig styling, and I enjoy reading and playing video games. I work as a full time dental assistant… and I model! Perhaps the most unusual thing about my success as a model is my size, as I’m only 150cm, which is aroun 4’11”.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I started actually modeling in February of 2014. Pretty much my whole life, I heard, “You’re too small for that” and “You’ll never make it because of your height”; but I woke up one day, determined to at least put myself out there: I wanted to model. I didn’t want to just look at the artistic, beautiful images… I wanted to be them.

Eira Rose as pin up girl for Coca ColaWhat are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

When it comes to the modeling industry, I’d like to see myself in more artistic formats in five years. I’m in love with fantasy, science fiction, and the absolute ethereal. I’d love to be paid to be in magazines that so often depict men and women who look simply untouchable. It doesn’t particularly interest me to be outright sexualized, which is a lot of the industry, and what a lot of people really enjoy doing. That’s just not who I am, or how I want to be depicted. In ten… well, ask me in five years.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

Usually, I do fashion, glamour, and art photo shoots. I’m really big on Japanese street fashions, so I’ve recently done a cute space-themed coordinate “uchuu kei” shoot, a lolita shoot, and I have a gothic aristocrat shoot coming up in the cooler months. I’m also into alternative fashions, from punk and grunge to pin-up. Pin-up seems to be a favorite with local photographers, and I’m definitely not complaining! I’ve done a cosplay shoot recently too, and that was magnificent; I made the costume myself, so, for me, it was art, as I made the character, then became the character. I’ve done some runway, too. In July 2015, I walked for the Japanese lolita fashion label, “Baby, the Stars Shine Bright” at Mechacon in New Orleans. It was a lot of fun, and I managed not to fall even though the shoes were five and a half sizes too big! I’d do it again too, given the opportunity.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

Some of my best experiences come from working with groups, actually. A friend of mine, Doll, organized a Fourth of July pinup shoot this year, and there were at least six photographers shooting, and I believe eight models. We laughed and had a lot of fun working that day. It was so hot and crowded in the studio, but everyone left happy with the work we did and the people with which we interacted. I won’t discuss my worst experiences in too much detail. I’ve met some photographers that make me very uncomfortable, and some who seem to know the exact angle that highlights a model’s flaws.

Eira Rose wearing a green gawnHave you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

One of my first shoots, the photographer thought it would be cute to have me put on a little boy’s shirt, and I’m talking real little, like 7-8 years old… and it fit, it was a little short, but it fit. It was kind of embarrassing, and kind of funny.

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

“Industry standards”. By no means is it anyone’s right to decide what’s beautiful or right. As a designer, I understand haute couture requiring height minimums and weight maximums- after all, the walk is about the clothing, not the people in them- but the standards are hurting people who are extremely beautiful, but weren’t born the right shape. A thousand times, I’ve wished my legs were longer and thinner, but genetics gave me hips, and martial arts gave me substantial thighs. I’ve wished I were taller, but that will never happen. And there are people killing themselves inside with these things, telling themselves they’re not good enough… all because of “industry standards”.

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I’ve never been good at sports, even though I was the most aggressive defender in my soccer division when I was in 6th grade; I can’t dance, and I love food. However, I love yoga, I walk daily, and I love to roller skate. I pretty much eat anything I want, but my “bad” foods are always in moderation, so I limit myself to one soda a day as a maximum, drinking predominately water, I don’t eat a lot of sweets or other junk food. I’ve found that eating excessive amounts of processed and empty calorie foods actually makes me sluggish, so maintaining a healthy diet isn’t even primarily about the way my body looks, but how it feels… it’s very important to me to make sure I feel great.

Eira Rose wearing a victorian era dressPlease share something people don’t know about you.

I don’t have a definitive gender identity. I’ve honestly been asked about it on several occasions, and I can never find an answer less vague than “nonbinary”. I’d love to describe it to you, but it’s not something anyone who doesn’t experience it can understand.

Would you change anything about yourself?

I did already mention that I’d like to be taller, but otherwise, I think I’d ditch my “jack of all trades, master of none” abilities to be a master of one or two of my favorite things.

Have you ever been fired from a job?

I worked, very briefly, at an AT&T satellite store called Extreme Wireless. About two months in, I was helping an elderly customer who wanted to add her tablet to her plan, but was on a fixed income and couldn’t afford to add it to her existing plan. So, I offered to change it, eliminating the unlimited calling and texting, since she didn’t use them often or even at all, and they weren’t required for the plan. Immediately, a coworker jumped on me, saying those plans had to have the texting, which I disagreed, and he insisted.

When I asked him why, he couldn’t give a real answer, and in the end the poor customer left more confused and let down than when she’d come in. He told me, “Don’t you ever question me in front of a customer again.” The next day, I was told by a manager that I was there to make the company money, not help people budget. I took my weekend off a week later, vowing to start looking for a new job after I got back from an event. The manager fired me Monday morning when I arrived because I was “just not a salesperson, and that I was too much customer service.” Sorry for not lying to old ladies. Oh, wait… no I’m not.

Interview with Marybeth Noonan — Model turned Miss Maine

Marybeth Noonan is a 21-year old model residing in Windham, Maine.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi there! I am Marybeth Noonan from Raymond, Maine. I am a 21-year-old college student studying broadcast journalism at Lyndon State College, and was recently crowned Miss Maine 2016 this Spring. I am extremely passionate about fundraising to combat the underfunding of pediatric cancer research.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I was in a Toyota commercial with my family when I was a baby but the first shoot that I remember was a casting call for an L.L. Bean catalogue when I was in elementary school. Then once I started competing in pageants in 2008, I became more involved with my modeling career.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

Winning Miss Maine was a huge goal of mine! I will be competing in Miss America this September. Maine has never produced a winner at Miss America so I’m hoping to change that. As for professional goals, I am working towards my degree in electronic journalism arts. I want to be a news anchor when I graduate.

Marybeth Noonan face closeupHow often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I have done a variety of modeling types but commercial photoshoots are my favorite. I love the shoots where I can smile the whole time! I really can’t pull off a serious shoot, it just isn’t me. I look at pictures where I’m trying to look serious and I can’t help but laugh at myself. I am such a bubbly and outgoing person, a somber look simply doesn’t match my look.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

I once had the opportunity to model for Tony Bowls in Orlando, FL. Most of the models were older than me and were so beautiful and refined. It boosted my confidence to think that I was “at their level” too. I’ll never forget wearing that stunning gown in front of the camera. I felt radiant. I have not had a bad experience in my modeling career. However, I turn down a lot of shoots because they are too sexy for my liking, as I am going to be a news anchor one day, and I want to set a good example and never pose in a shoot that is too promiscuous.

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

I once had shoot with a live animal called a sugar glider. Sugar gliders are small little creatures and belong to the possum family. Since they are nocturnal they like to hide in pockets and dark places. I was a little nervous to hold it but everything was working out fine until the little guy ran down my shirt and hid in my chest! It was so funny yet embarrassing.

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

I think we need more body-positive campaigns in the modeling industry. The apparel brand Aerie no longer re-touches or photoshops their models. We need more companies like that.

Marybeth Noonan next to a treeDo you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I love to run and weight lift: there’s no better feeling than seeing your body get stronger. I like to look healthy and fit opposed to extremely thin. I eat 6 small meals a day that mainly consist of lean protein and complex carbs, as my health is a huge priority in my life.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I have gone indoor-skydiving!

Would you change anything about yourself?

I used to be really critical of my fair skin. Now that I’m older I understand the importance of keeping my skin healthy. I have traded in the tanning oil for SPF, as I would much rather be a little pale than get skin cancer when I’m older!

What is your hidden talent?

I can hula-hoop for hours without stopping! I recently went to a local parade and festival as Miss Maine, where I saw there was a hula-hooping competition and couldn’t resist. I walked out onto the field in my crown, dress and heels and joined the competition. All of the kids loved it, it was so much fun.

Interview with Celka — A musician who models

Celka is a 23-year old model residing in Springfield, Missouri.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Celka, and I come from a very unique family. I was born in Houston, Texas, however currently live in Springfield, Missouri, and will be moving to LA this fall to pursue an MM in Music Composition at USC. As it stands right now, I am a freelance model, musician, and office manager at my mother’s weight loss clinic. My father is a physics professor for a local university, but has credentials that extend to doing contract work for NASA occasionally; he was a finalist in the astronaut program once upon a time and therefore trained with people who eventually became astronauts.

My mother has an incredible musical history; her father was principal bassist for a symphony in Seattle, but also played jazz bass and trombone. This musical history is why I am a musician now – when my grandfather died, we inherited several instruments, including a cello older than the United States. My older brother now plays that cello, I have a younger brother who plays violin, and I play viola. We therefore used to play regularly as a string trio, and all of us play professionally. While my younger brother has decided to pursue performance, my interests went in the direction of composition, which is why I will be studying at USC this fall.

My family is very proud of our heritage – my grandmother on my dad’s side is a famous cook known to be the one in America to turn to for Finnish cooking and much of Scandinavian cooking. All of us have been to Finland, my brothers and I having both played music and visited the town of our ancestors. My Finnish and Scandinavian look is why people thought I should model in the first place, and other than writing and performing music, I enjoy drawing, have conducted music for productions in the past and like to sing.

Celka modeling a red dressWhen, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

Throughout high school people consistently told me that I should model, but I didn’t believe them. My career was sparked when the photographer that took my senior photos asked me back for a makeup shoot for his online magazine, however it didn’t truly start until a couple of years into college, when I decided I would take the plunge, primarily to raise money for myself. While monetarily it hasn’t supported me, it has improved me substantially as a person – I am much more confident than I was before I started modeling.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

The question “Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?” has always bothered me simply for the fact that, while I have goals, I have no intention of being upset with where life leads me. My goal in life is to expand my horizons – I intend to pursue music composition professionally, perhaps with modeling, but perhaps without. I will not be discouraged if modeling is not always a part of my life; it has been fun and I would love to do it professionally, but I’ve never been in a position to pursue it full-time.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I primarily do photo-shoots – I used to do them almost weekly, with most photographers wanting me for artistic shots, however with my current schedule I was no longer interested in trade for time. I do shoot for pay perhaps every month or so. In the past I have done a few fashion walks for charity and also just for fun.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

My best experience was a photo-shoot I set up myself, when I had adopted a rescue dog who had lost all of his faith due to maltreatment. He was a breeder dog, from a pedigree bloodline, so he was still gorgeous. I coordinated with a photographer to model an outfit from a local boutique that matched the dog’s markings. As for my worst experience, I will not name anyone specifically – the worst shoots were always ones where the photographer or organization was ambitious, but disorganized. I have frequently worked against egos convinced of their superior professionalism, which in turn ruined the quality of the shoot. When fellow models’ feelings are hurt or when my day basically goes down the drain because of someone’s poor organizational skills and lack of care to the models’ schedules, I put those photographers or designers down as people with whom I will never work again.

Celka holding a violin at a beachHave you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

This doesn’t pertain specifically to my modeling career, but – I went viral for a while for making faces! Last year I submitted a bunch of hideous photos of myself imitating celebrity facial expressions and the internet ate it up. Thanks to that little fluke, I ended up with a contract with an acting agency.

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

As with many gigs people try to give me musically, a lot of modeling gigs are expected to be voluntary. Models, especially where I’m from, are frequently used without payment. I do not have time to do modeling voluntarily, which is why I don’t model as much anymore – I have other ambitions, just as anyone organizing a shoot or fashion walk does. When I’m there, I will do my best and be as efficient as possible – sometimes actions taken by organizers suggest that they assume otherwise.

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

For exercise, I walk and do an exercise program called Essentrics – it’s wonderful because it tones and lengthens your muscles while stretching your body and keeping it nimble, so I walk away from a workout refreshed. Diet-wise, I listen to my body, as I don’t eat food that leaves me feeling exhausted, which includes fried foods. When eating out I always ask for grilled instead of fried chicken, forgo extraneous sauces such as ranch dressings, and make sure my plate is colorful, with greens to combat the carbs and meats. I believe in a protein and fiber quota – each meal must have a healthy serving of both. Some carbs are okay but must never be the main constitution of a meal. It’s all about balance.

Celka face closeupPlease share something people don’t know about you.

My passion for dinosaurs never died: I still know a lot about them and love reading news on new findings. For a while growing up I wanted to be a paleontologist.

Would you change anything about yourself?

I’m always working to appreciate something new. Sometimes my developed biases get in the way of learning about a new thing; I am regardless still doing my best to keep an open mind.

What features do you look for in a partner?

I don’t care how interesting it is – humility. People are going to say all sorts of things, but humility is perhaps the strongest factor in who I choose. Humility is what makes one strive to be a better person than they were yesterday – if you don’t have that, why would you ever aspire to change?

Interview with MercedesLeigh — Student, Conservationist & Model

MercedesLeigh is a 24-year old model residing in Starkville, Mississippi.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m from a small down in Wisconsin, go pack go! I’m obsessed with saving coral reefs and sea turtles. I’ve done scientific research in Texas, Belize, Wisconsin, Mississippi, Australia, and San Diego…where to next? I’m a student for life, and I hope my modeling can bring some conservation attention to the scene.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I first got involved with modeling in Newcastle, Australia, working as a brand ambassador. Later, when I lived in San Diego I had an Uber driver tell me about this awesome site called Model Mayhem that I would be great for. I loved the idea of expressing yourself without words.

MercedesLeigh modeling a flowered dressWhat are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

In five years I see myself modeling for conservation work, and maybe even doing wildlife shooting. I hope to have started a scientific research and conservation program to save marine organisms from corals to sea turtles and everything in between! I hope to be making a difference in this world.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

Modeling can be anything from hours a week to nothing a week depending on photographers demands and seasonality. With school I’m always on the go and rarely have time to stop and smell the roses. But I still manage to sneak on some beach time here and there.

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I try to avoid processed foods, which in this day and age is impossible. I work out as often as possible which usually ends up being only a couple of days a week with work.

MercedesLeigh playing an uke on the roadPlease share something people don’t know about you.

I used to train dolphins and sea lions with the US Navy.

Would you change anything about yourself?

I would change my anxiety. Just to be able to relax and enjoy every moment we have.

If you had only 24 hours left to live, what would you do?

I’d make my family and best friends go on an awesome-sauce road trip down to the Florida coral reef marine preserves and try something that I was always fascinated by that they would never otherwise try. We would snorkel and scuba dive until the sun disappeared from the sky.

Interview with Deven — SAG-AFTRA Actress, Rock Singer, Model

Deven is a 28-year old model residing in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

Greetings, and it’s a pleasure to have you take an interest in my work as well as this blog. I am Michigan-made and proud, having lived on both sides of the state. I have a Bachelors Degree in Theatre and took my passion overseas where I studied Drama in London, and growing up on the stage put a curse on the world for me, it’s the only place I really feel like I am home, although it definitely helped with my wonderful relationship with the camera and how I express myself.

When I moved to Detroit, I became a full-time artist; shooting films and commercials, modeling for local clothing companies and magazines, as well as developing two very amazing rock bands. I also grew up in a family of musicians, so music and singing are also huge parts of my life; and aside from the arts, I have many hobbies, including fitness training, pole dancing, yoga, dance, cooking, astronomy, and traveling… not forgetting my family and adorable cats.

Deven under blue lightWhen, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I started modeling in my late teens but never felt comfortable branching out until I started acting professionally. I never saw myself as a model, just a young girl who liked dressing up and taking photos. When I started getting exposure from film, I knew I had to set my standards higher for myself which meant branch out in different areas of art, which included modeling. Head shots were crucial so on top of a headshot session, I would have a modeling session. Then I got involved with doing live runway shows and print work in Detroit which was an incredible experience.

My inner tigress came out during the live shows, I felt like I was thriving; in my recent shoots, I have been known to be aggressive, raw, and let’s say… unconventional, depending on what type of shoot, of course. I prefer going places models usually don’t go, because I have the advantage of extensive acting experience on camera and on stage, and as such my passion drives my body wherever it happens to go in the shoot. Now, I am taking my career to a whole different, higher level of commitment, and finally believe I can make my mark as an artist. Modeling is a huge part of helping me love and respect myself, and to help aspire to be the best I can be.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

Professional goals are simple: win an Oscar, win a Grammy, and create art with incredible people around the world, which will be a lot of work, but I am one to reach instead of wonder. I hope to one day be able to travel all over the world and connect with people from all walks of life, maybe even raise a family and live in a different place… I can see myself touring in a few years, filming overseas and taking my cats wherever I go. Most importantly, I want to see myself happier and healthier than ever.

Wherever I will be, I hope it is surrounded by good food, good company, and good beer. I love craft beer, always loved the idea of running a theatre or brewery down the road and I can get away with running the show. So, nothing too big.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I am a working actress, which is my primary career, and I do a lot of print shoots that are more Gothic or alternative fashion; then I got into doing more Erotic, Fetish, and BDSM shows and walk the catwalk, flog the models, and others. Lingerie and Chains soon became some favorite things to wear. I took a break from modeling as I went through a transition in my life and am now back and ready to rock, and I have a promo video in production which should be ready by Spring. I was also just recently published with over 20 prints, and have more in the mix, and I am always in search of more gigs and hope to make modeling another career.

Deven toplessPlease tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

I haven’t really had a bad experience, I learned from other models to research who you are working with and always be in communication with the photographer. So, I’ve never been in a bind, however, the most interesting shoot I did was in town, and I never met the guy personally. I loved his style, and we wanted to meet up and talk, where he told me to just bring a bunch of different clothes and we would wing it. When I got to his studio, I took a look at his artwork and immediately knew the clothes I brought would be useless. So, thankfully I had pasties, I put on a Mexican wrestling mask, and we ended up shooting for almost 8 hours!

It was an awkward beginning but as we worked, we developed a great friendship; it was intense and emotional, and crazy and wild. He is still a dear friend of mine. My best experience so far has been recent, as I just had my first publication of being a Cover Model for a magazine, as well as having over 10 solo shots and 10 shots with a lovely young woman. It was an honor to have been selected, and I can’t wait to get published again. Fingers crossed!

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

Probably, however I have no shame and prefer the strange, so what may seem normal to me, may be strange for others. I guess not every gig will ask a model to flog the other models at the end of a fashion show, and dance in nothing but leather straps; before the show, I was lucky enough to have a fellow model tell me I had toilet paper stuck on the bottom of my boot, so she saved me from some embarrassment.

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

Yes. However, I think the industry is evolving in a positive direction, at least how the world views models. The expectations are more realistic and healthy, models are different sizes and shapes, which are more relatable to the public eye. Designers are growing bold, and there are many more models and designers coming into their own thanks for social media. I am looking forward to seeing where the industry goes.

Deven fully naked with tapeDo you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I am a gym monkey, I am in at least 5 days a week, rotating cardio, swimming, and weightlifting. I also pole dance and study yoga. Diet and nutrition are very important to maintain the type of physique I identify with, although most of my young adult life, I was a horrible eater and always forgot to eat or starve myself a week before a shoot. The weight would come off but come back on just as fast. That would cycle into lowering self-confidence, and fearing the gym.

Plus, I am a musician and we had a lot of shows, and a lot of drinking to do. I’d see myself in pictures as skinny, and not in a good way, so I decided instead of getting frustrated with myself, I took action to develop healthy habits instead of grandiose goals. Goals sounds sexier, but habits are consistent, as with eating healthy, I have energy and optimism to work out, which helps my overall mentality and perception on life. Go eat some colorful food, drink a lot of water, get some good sleep, and smile.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I am hyper-extended in my arms and legs, which makes horror shoots extra fun, which means I can spin my arms around in different ways and gross out the manliest of men.

Would you change anything about yourself?

I have always had an insecurity towards my nose, and tried to distract from it by having bangs for 8 years. Since I grew my bangs out, I have had more compliments on my nose and face than ever before. I found my nose irritating because it would cast a shadow in photos, and utter nonsense that I eventually realized there was no point in criticizing. I took to heart what friends said: to just embrace myself, nose and all.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Beer and cheese, or beer cheese, or pasta with cheese… I have an unhealthy obsession with it. Life is too short not to indulge every once in a while. In fact, it’s healthy to treat yourself in moderation. If I gave up cheese forever, I would die, or just be very sad.

Interview with WhineyFu Cosplay — Model, Geek, Whiner, knows little kung fu

WhineyFu Cosplay is a 27-year old model residing in New Baltimore, Michigan.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

Workaholic born in and living with my family in southeast Michigan, I am a full time doctoral student in the mental health field, and currently work full time in an office, part time as a mental health professional, all while going to school. I work on school work, model, and cosplay on the weekends, as well as write, draw, and sing terribly. Cosplaying has become a passionate hobby for me as it combines the fashion and photography that I love and the pop culture I feed on. Life is good when I can attend a convention once a month.

WhineyFu Cosplay lying on a wallWhen, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I have wanted to do something with fashion and modeling since high school but I was not mentally or physically in a healthy place for anything like that at the time. I have been cosplaying for over 5 years now and have been doing photoshoots of my costumes during that time, but it was only recently that I branched out into fashion and boudoir shoots after I won a photoshoot session with Bontisha Rose photography in February 2015. I had never thought I could do anything of just me for modeling as I do think I am tall or thin. I am mentally and physically healthy enough for this now at this time of my life. Modeling channels my creativity and I hope this creativity can inspire others and affect others how it has positively affected me.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

Hopefully, I will be Dr. WhineyFu Cosplay in 5 years, since I am a second year doctoral student. I hope to be employed full time doing something I love, and would like to be able to incorporate modeling and my cosplay into my educational career too. Cosplay takes a certain level of self-esteem, confidence, and worth. Cosplay for your mental health, anyone?

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I do the majority of my modeling work on the weekend as that is the only time I have availability. I am either doing a photoshoot, walking around a convention, or working on my costumes. As of right now, I photoshoot cosplay, fashion, art, and glamour, but I would love to do more, especially catwalks and acting, but just no nudity.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

I haven’t really had a “worst” experience so far in modeling. Each photographer I have worked with has been great and has given me more experience in my modeling. I really do like it though when a photographer is just as geeked about a photo as I am. I do notice a lot of nude requests for photoshoots now, in general, and although I have no problem personally with nudity, I do not want that for my modeling photoshoots.

WhineyFu Cosplay at a lakeHave you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

I love interacting with people while I am in cosplay at conventions, or outside of conventions. Some of the most memorable interactions I have had are with kids who think I am that actually character I am dressed up as. As for embarrassing, I have certainly tripped and face-planted a few times while in cosplay. No pain and gain, right?

Is there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

More body types advertised for women and men. Models sell products and an image, then why not meet the consumers’ needs? I love clothes and fashion, but every time I see an ad selling me something, it is on a model who is either smaller or bigger than me. You want to sell me something? Show me how it looks on someone like me.

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I used to participate in sports when I was younger, and I played soccer for over 10 years. I exercise almost everyday early in the morning on my elliptical and then also add a little bit of weight lifting on the weekends. I also walk my dog almost ever day when I have the chance to do so. I keep track of just about everything I eat to keep aware of what I am putting in my body and what I am putting out. However, I do not stress too much about what I am eating or if I am “bad” for a day.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I love the movies and collect movie ticket stubs. And the most times I have seen a movie in theaters is 21 times.

Would you change anything about yourself?

I would like to say no but that’s not true. I can only imagine the chaos I could cause if I were taller; people always say I look taller than I actually am, but I would like to actually be taller. Maybe that’s why I am always in heels?

What is your favorite thing to do alone?

I am usually never alone because of my dog but when it is just the 2 of us, we like to sit on the couch and marathon TV shows or watch a new movie we have heard about but never seen before. All of this while working on a costume and yelling or arguing with the TV. I talk to myself and the dog when I am alone. Good company.

Interview with Carmen Maria — Recording Artist and model

Carmen Maria is a 24-year old model residing in Flint, Michigan.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

I was born in Pontiac Michigan, and grew up with an older brother, sister, and younger sister. I started to sing and model when I was 3, and graduated from Genesee Early College as the first graduating class and earned my undergrad in Human Biology at the University of Michigan Flint.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industry?

I have been modeling since I was three years old, have participated in many contests and catalogs. I begged to get back into it when I was sixteen and continued ever since. I took a short break to finish my human biology degree from the University of Michigan, but now it is my main focus again.

Carmen Maria modeling black dress and high heelsWhat are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

My long-term goal is to be an international recording artist. I see myself traveling all over the world for work in five to ten years, and see myself on magazine covers and brightly lit stages, as well as having out an original album, and creating a perfume line and also writing my own book.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

I model often and it consists mainly of photo-shoots. I love glamour, especially old glamour, have participated in catalogs, and learned to walk the catwalk at seven years old. I love fashion and creating images with photographers that stretch my boundaries.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

The best experiences I have had modeling have been shoots where I show a lot of emotion and am able to totally express myself. I love when I can look so versatile that I barely recognize myself, and it is so amazing being paid to travel to shoot. Some less fun experiences include modeling in the Michigan snow and getting bitten by red ants while modeling on a rock.

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

Getting bit by ants was kind of funny afterwards because you could actually zoom in and see the ants on my upper thigh and then once I realized I was being bitten and got some interesting shots of me jumping around.

Carmen Maria face closeupIs there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

The industry being so limited in its vision of what is beautiful.

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I participate in yoga, swimming, hiking, I love being active. I typically eat unprocessed food because it is so much better to put good nutrients into our bodies without excess chemicals.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I am very concerned about the water crisis in my home town of Flint Michigan.

Would you change anything about yourself?

I would be more patient and taller.

What is your favorite thing to do alone?

Sing! I love to sing alone to perfect my talent, and although I don’t expect perfection, I definitely strive for it. I love to practice performing with a microphone and everything when I am by myself. I think it is important to go all out even when practicing, and I think the only way to make your dreams a reality is to think with optimism and never stop striving for more.
