Model conventions

Being a model can be difficult. For one thing, you have a lot of competition. With the popularity of model reality shows, it seems that everyone has discovered their inner models. To be able to get noticed by different agencies and companies, models usually attend model searches. Usually, through the coordination of their modelling agencies, these models attend the searches and hope that they will be noticed for a call-back by companies in need of new models. There seems to be very little opportunities to be recognized, but thankfully, there are model conventions. These model conventions are ideal for up and coming models who are looking to crack that first job as a model. Model conventions are just as effective, if not more effective, than model searches. It is usually bigger in scope, and it usually takes longer than searches.

Model Conventions are similar to model searches, but there are some important distinctions. To begin with model conventions are of a much bigger scope than model searches. This is due mainly to the fact that participants of conventions usually come from modeling schools. Naturally, modelling schools have a bigger population than modelling agencies. These schools come from across the country, and some schools are even international. Schools tend to be more supportive during conventions because schools, like agencies, receive a portion of the model’s fee when they attend. It is a money-making activity for them, so they are very active and supportive when it comes to similar events.

Conventions usually enjoy an attendance count of up to 2,500 models. The smaller conventions usually have around 800 – 1,000 attendees, which is not so bad, as compared to model searches, which only reach about 200 contestants from different modelling agencies. Of course, attendees for conventions also include agencies. Naturally, this is where the young models are – the “fresh” ones who will give you new blood to their roster. These agencies usually answer to the fashion industry, as this industry always wants to “discover” a new model or a fresh face, as part of its runway collection or other similar activities.

Conventions are also more thorough than model searches. In fact, it is chockful of events, that will not only benefit the models, but other individuals as well, such as photographers, talent agents, and those related to the industry. Sometimes, a runway show will be held, to be able to showcase the talents of the models. They can also set-up booths to with photographers, so they can also work on their set cards while the convention is on-going. Historically, call-backs have taken place during conventions, and their efforts have been successful in bringing attention to the participating models.

If you have dreams of becoming the next big thing in modelling, then make sure that you are present in events such as these. They may be exhausting, but it is really very helpful for you. Do not be disheartened if you do not get a call-back on your first convention. Just keep on trying and keep on reaching out to different agencies and companies. Soon, you’ll land that first modelling gig.
