Interview with Ssuubi — Model /Fashionista

Ssuubi is a model residing in Los Angeles, California.

How would you introduce yourself to our readers?

I was born in Uganda, East Africa, raised in North America, chosen as the Ugandan representative to the 2008 Face of Africa contest  -“Africa’s Ultimate Model Search”- and made it to the final round. Modeled in North America, Asia and Africa.

Modeling or anything related to fashion and Arts is not only a job for me, but it is also a passion that I enjoy and love doing.

When, how and why did you first get involved in the modeling industrySsuubi modeling a swimsuit?

I started out in small fashion shows. Later on, during a trip to Africa, I was chosen as the Ugandan representative for the 2008 Face of Africa contest -“Africa’s Ultimate Model Search”- and made it to the final round. Since then I have modeled in North America, Asia and Africa.

What are your personal and professional goals? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

I see myself still involved in the fashion industry and as well doing something that involves motivating young girls and women in Africa.

How often are you modeling and what does it usually consist of?

It depends on the season, some are slow i.e December to January and others are busy. My modeling career usually consists either of photo-shoots or runway shows, mostly runway shows.

Please tell us about the best and/or worst experiences you’ve had so far in modeling.

Best experience was in Asia where I not only experienced the culture, but I also met a lot of people from all over the world as well.

Worst: injuring my leg and having to work though I was in pain, I had to put on a brave face. Also, perhaps not the worse but somewhat annoying, having to wait long periods of time receiving payments from agents. Working with unprofessional and rude people would also have to be another one of my bad experiences.

Have you had anything funny, embarrassing or completely out of the ordinary happen during your modeling career?

Embarrassing would have to be during a show that was on live television. I was on stage and towards the end of the runway, I slipped and almost fell not only off the stage but as well onto the photographers. Luckily, I got my grip together, everyone looked in shock and I just embarrassingly laughed it off. I mean what else could I do?

Ssuubi wearing a pink dress in the streetsIs there anything you would change about the modeling industry if you could?

Diversity. I would love to see more ethnic girls on the runway. More asian, indian, black, mixed and others rather than just a couple to every dozen caucasian models on the runway.

Do you practice any sports and what do you typically eat? Please elaborate on the importance of nutrition and exercise in your life.

I practice Yoga and kick boxing. I eat as healthy as possible, mostly organic foods. I believe working out and eating healthy are important not only for a healthy lifestyle but as well a healthy body and mind.

Please share something people don’t know about you.

I can speak four languages, two fluently and two moderately. Also, I’m a pretty good dancer. From African to belly dance and currently taking a Hip hop and Jazz class.

Would you change anything about yourself?

I am happy and wouldn’t change anything. I believe in the saying “Be Yourself no matter what other people think, besides, an original is worth more than a copy”.

What is the one talent you wish you possessed?

If I could hear through brick layered walls or read people’s minds.
